1975 Commando 850 restoration

Unacceptable. Currently looking for a painter. Lesson learned, some things are better left to the professionals.

Progress. Per Old Britts install instructions, they siliconed the swingarm plugs. I did too but with black RTV silicone. Before and after.

A little tour of my shop area. Note the containers my woman got for me so I could keep everything organized. I love her!

That is POWDERCOAT??????

Yikes, who recommended THAT outfit?

If it was hand-painted, I've certainly done better with good ol' Rust-O-Leum gloss black rattle cans...

Over spray says Larry rattlecanned it.

Bit humid in the shop?

Humid, dusty and just me trying to save time and money. I've saved neither. Another lesson learned.
What paint did you use?

Like I said, I've used Rust-O-Leum many times on rough basket cases - it goes on easy and it holds up well.

I used Rust-O-Leum also. You must be a better painter than me. Painting, much like drywall seems to be an art. I'm more mechanical than artsy. Most things I can do well, painting and drywall are not one of those things.

Been on the hunt for a powder coating outfit and I have found someone I'd like to do business with. Besides the frame, swingarm and cradle, what other items would you powder coat? I'm thinking just about anything painted black but I'm unsure about the oil tank.

As above !

I would ask to see samples of their work and pay particular attention to thickness. And ask them honestly about there approach and how they can ensure they won’t do it too thick.

Ideally, only go to an outfit that comes via a trusted personal recommendation.

Powder is great when done well (just look in the cNw gallery for proof of that). Sadly I have never had any done well, it’s always come out way too thick, but by then of course, it’s too f***ing late !

All you have to do is send the following illustrations along with the parts and INSURE they understand proper masking and plugging.

When mounting the oil tank, eliminate the bottom bolt.

Not shown are the fork yokes, which are Silver. Mask the threaded end of the stem and all 4 internal stanchion bores.

Damn, grandpaul, I got a cramp in my finger liking your posts! This is going to make everything so much easier. Thank you. This guy is local and recommended by a custom bike shop so we'll see how it goes. Thanks again.
