How to most likely stop your Norton
Mine with dual 4-pots is pretty likely to stop you; I also built one with dual Tokico 6-pots and Confederate full floating discs on a Dreer VR880 hub laced to EXcel wheels by Buchanan's. That was a ZX7 front end (rear end was monoshock)...

It seems like this brake thread is all about uber custom racing systems. Not that that is bad. It just doesn't seem all that
much "Norton". But what the heck do I know? I'm just an old man.

I could show a dozen crispy clean shiny stock Commando front brakes I've done, but it seems like no fun in that...

That's precisely the challenge. Presenting a tasteful, quality photograph of something most folks on here would consider "no fun".

Anyone with a pocketful of cash can slap a fancy Italian thing on their wheel and close crop a grainy photograph from 2005.

But there I go making up rules for a contest I had no hand in creating. Everyone have fun!

It is fun ! I even coughed up the $ 40 so I could join in . Don’t want to jinx anything but it would appear that F E will be getting a new sweatshirt- now if we could find him a cNw ball cap to replace the one his dog ate ...

The original poster/contest starter stated his trial contest was for “the best photo of a front brake”.

That’s clear, straightforward and easy to understand, at least to me.
Complaining just detracts from the fun of it.
It’s not complicated....why take It anywhere else...you don’t like the parameters don’t post.
Some of the commentary sounds like it wants to kill the concept before it gets any traction.:(
It’s supposed to be fun.

Well, I counted them up, and 25 of them are on street bikes, 5 are on race bikes, and 2 are on bikes that were both race and street bikes. Might be a little error in those numbers, but not much. Many of what you are dumping into the "uber custom racing systems" are not. They are just upgrades for better braking on the street (and maybe for the bling too :D). But, yes, some of them are serious race systems. And I'm clearly the guilty party, having posted 4 of the five race bike brakes and one of the dual use ones. But that's because I've spent a large part of my life building and racing Nortons, so that's the kind of stuff I have. I also posted pnotos of brakes on my street Nortons.

I'm one of those owners who enjoys experimenting with mods to my bikes, whether for performance, comfort, or appearance, not a restorer. I don't think that makes them "not all that much Norton", but I realize that some of the serious restorers don't look at them that way. I think my approach to the hobby probably led me to assume that interesting brakes were the intent of the contest, so that's what I posted. My apologies if I got it wrong.

I took Jerry's statement of "best photo of a front brake" to mean photos of interesting front brakes, not just a contest for best photographer. Now I'm wondering if I might have been wrong. Only Jerry knows for sure. If it is just a photographic quality contest, I'll cheerfully delete mine with no offense taken. None of them are anywhere near what a serious photographer could produce.

When this idea was being discussed in another thread, the question was posed; is this about photography, or motorcycles. Consensus was it is about motorcycles.

Ken, you did NOT get it wrong. You made the thread !

Pete, to paraphrase you; “anyone with a pocket full of cash can buy a fancy camera and take an arty shot of a boring brake”. Not quite true of course, but no less true than your statement. And no less insulting I might add.

These pictures actually are like art. When you look at them you’re looking at history, at what was going on in a moment in time, at someone’s ‘Johnathon Livingstone Seagull’ style quest for their own version of perfection, or at least improvement. Each picture has a story behind it.

I guess what this proves is that even a simple, fun concept like this ain’t easy on internet forums !

Well, that’s my view at least. But I’m with Ken, if I’m wrong and this actually is supposed to be a photography thread, then I’ll happily remove my shoddy, amateurish, iPhone snaps too.

Jerry, I honestly don’t know where you find the motivation sometimes...

I would argue that the word "contest" denotes a level of sport, or challenge. Certainly there is nothing sporting about merely owning a nice brake.

Why not take this as an opportunity to challenge oneself? Try to get a really nice photo of that really nice brake? That's all I'm saying. By the way, the camera on an iPhone is a damn good digital camera...

We can talk about these things without taking offense or calling in papa Jerry to sort us out...

Kinda tricky to take a sexy shot of something you haven’t got anymore doncha think?

IMHO, that would remove 99% of the interesting photos in this thread.

But, seriously, it depends what it is. Is it a forum to post pics of interesting brakes, or a forum to host a photogrophy skills ‘contest’ ?

Whichever it is, let’s clarify and carry on.

Its ‘papa’ Jerry’s game tho... so he has last say on the rules...

It's a contest to see which one gets more likes.

I think we have a winner...

A great test thread with a lot of very pretty and interesting brakes. It has been fun complete with sometimes controversial commentary
which just goes to show how diverse a group of people we are. Bring on more.

Hard to argue with the leading contender. Nigel's entry is about as good looking as you can get in a classic drum brake, and it just looks right on a Norton. It might be a little trite to say that it's really a work of art, but in this case it seems appropriate.

Thanks Ken!

Trouble is... It’s not in a Norton...

I feel kinda bad taking the chequered flag on a Norton site, with a non Norton.

So... I respectfully withdraw from the running...that opens it up a lot as there’s only 3 points between the next 6 highest scorers AND they’re all Norton’s .... !

And besides that... if a drum brake wins Al will have a heart attack...
