bike identification

Hi
I hope no one is getting annoyed with what might be classed as stupid question but here is my next question.
I have previously asked what was missing off the back wheel and what brake should be on the front - disc or drum.
Having now researched the various options open to me regarding brakes I have tried to identify the exact model of my bike, it was sold to me as a fast back but when I look on the Norvil site I am getting confused as to what it actually is. The documents state that it was first registered on the 1st March 1972 and the engine/frame numbers are the same 200212,
any help would be appreciated.

My list shows anything over 200001 starting in Jan 72 could be anything from Fastback, Roadster, FB long range, Hi Rider, or Interstate. Does that help? No. They're all essentially the same bike, just different cosmetic parts. Anyone at any point could make something else out of it, unless you can get the factory records, Andover Norton may be able to help.

The information on the Norvil website is unreliable, because the model information is rather too basic to be of much value and some Commando variants have been completely missed off the list altogether therefore it can result in much confusion as it is often misleading.

Well....it's a 1972 Commando, quite likely to have been a Fastback originally, and probably less likely to have been an Interstate, however, it isn't always possible to identify the actual Commando variant from the serial number-as the information simply isn't available to the general public, you'd have to contact either the VMCC's or UK NOC's records and dating sections as they are the ones who have access to the surviving Norton factory records for that period.

Hasn't it been stated here before that the factory records in many cases are somewhat basic
- if they are not missing altogether - and the model type wasn't even recorded ?

Trying to see if this loads....see a jpeg of the factory records page with 200212. Original dealer was Jack Butler and what looks like lem. You were correct it was a fastback however a long range fastback

There is, or was, a Jack Butler Motorcycles and Accessories listed in Leamington Spa in Warwickshire.
Could still be current, although its a modest address these days.
Thanks for the view of the Commando factory page, 1st one I've seen...

Always said there was more $$ in hairdressing than motorcycles/accessories ?!

Off topic somewhat, but can we find when that business/address changed hands ?
Odd that there are hundreds of google results for it, if it is no longer current ?

yes I live in the UK, I bought the bike from Ledbury and I live in Worcestershire so it would seem it never went too far.

200212 is a pretty rare bike then (if it still exists in it's original livery).

True, but brakes are rather important and if your going to be riding it in modern traffic you might want to go ahead and put some more modern brakes on it. It would still be a Long Range Fastback,

I thought the LR F/B's were mostly `71's.
If I'm reading this thread correctly then I would say it's one of the "last" LR Fastbacks.

With the introduction of the Interstate there was no need for it so it could be one of the last Factory LR's. Looking at some of the dates on the Factory sheet of when the bikes were shipped they seem to be all over the place, with some not being shipped (if this is what the date refers to ?) until Oct 72 and these are all early 72 model year numbers. They must have been in some mess, wonder if the main bearing issue mean't some got shipped once, returned and then reshipped
