TAB II Alloy Tank #3

Mine is complete. Impossible to see any irregularities or defects from photographs of a highly polished surface. Despite being a bit anal with my bikes , these tanks are hand made - they are gonna be there - and I guess any irregularities prove that. They have the Monza cap exactly where I wanted it which is great.

Be prepared for imperfections and flaws. As you said, it’s hand made.

I’ve seen the photos of the welds on one of the tanks and although pictures are not the same as in person, I think the Norton tank welds look a little better.

Either way, congrats on the beautiful art work. It’s been a long wait for you.

Thanks Voodoo,

I noticed the weld comparison also - I’m gonna embrace the hand made nature of what is a beautiful tank and challenge myself to be less anal:rolleyes:! A curse engrained over many years.

I’m guessing that back in the day the boys in London, racing a jukebox track between bridges on the North Circular, weren’t particularly worried about tank imperfections - self preservation, or the Old Bill! Simpler times!

TAB are first class to deal with. I would recommend them without hesitation.

Gss torch welding is way more old school traditional than Tig welding.
I too am OCD with my stuff. But I also accept handmade over manufactured.

Yeah they're gas welded....everything they do is old school traditional, from the English wheel, through to the tin snips used for cutting the underside parts by hand, and the hand gas welded completed assembly. You won't get a tig finish with gas welding.

Did any of the lucky recipients of the TAB tank receive decals of any sort?

Thanks.
They did tell me they could provide Norton Logos and pinstriping stickers when my tank was finished. I didn't take them up on the offer as the design I was after, they couldn't proved.

Thanks guys, just asked the question - I’ll post the response for anyone else ordering.

Explanation about decals with further images of mounting hardware.

Ya gotta love a bit of personalised service that you get from a small business that’s clearly proud of what it turns out.

The tank will still look pretty cool painted black, although it would’nt be my choice to cover up all of that chrome goodness!

Have you thought about the original black paintwork Bf, but leaving just the scallops chrome - bounded by a gold pinstripe. Not unlike the Thruxton TFC?

Same fairing shape as I’m fitting so I keep eyeing up this paint scheme - or a version of.

Yes, Stephen. I've thought of that. Also thought of the scallops black, edged in gold stripes. Nothing set in stone yet.

Yep. I‘m (half) firming up - possibly, maybe - on a similar pinstriping and internals to the original, black with gold decal. Thicker black pinstripe on the outside of that so that ya can pick out the gold pinstripe.

Or not - I’m decidedly undecided:rolleyes:!

Niiiice - wanky - cool - pointless - great - pretentious - appropriate - unauthentic - spot on, or just WTF?

Any combination to describe these tank straps with TAB tank?? 👀

Awkward to modify/fit, but doable.

Utterly pointless and extreme bad taste IMO.

Well you did ask…
Pointless beyond a bita-bling I grant FE; same as the Triumph straps on their modern bikes I guess.

Same could be said of the ally tank itself though I suppose - nothing wrong with my OEM one ;)!

An alloy tank is still a tank. So it is serving a function. It’s honest.

A tank strap that actually holds the tank is the same, it’s serving a function. It’s honest.

A racer puts function over form and looks great as a result. It’s honest.

A chopper or bobber unashamedly puts form over function. This is also cool as it’s ‘honest’.

It’s when bits that do nothing are added, that are pretending they serve a function, that it gets tacky for me.

You’re actually fitting parts that are purely form over function masquerading as function over form !

And yes, I agree that the Thruxton tank strap is exactly the same !

And yes, I also agree, I often over think things…

So it’s a ‘no’ for you FE?
