The tickler is also known to some as a "primer". In reality, the tickler is a primer. When you tickle an Amal carburetor you must press down on the plunger. When the tickler has been pushed and held down, the plunger internally pushes down on the float causing the float needle to leave the seat. When the needle leaves the seat it causes the float bowl to "overfill" or "flood".

A motorcycle that has a "rich" condition at idle or on the pilot jet will be easier to start. When you tickle the carbs it acts in a similar manner making start ups easier. Have you ever tried starting you Triumph or BSA without using the tickler? Its almost impossible to start....

Directly above is actually about a cold start vs an engine at operating temps, but you can end up somewhere in between.

Like a shutdown & restart 5-10mnts later. vs a hot restart which is usually just kick & go

Absolutely. Reject a decent 53 year old motorcycle after wanting one for 40 years because a defective part was replaced? Not entirely logical, is it?

I think what people fear is that they are being ripped off with a bike built from parts.

Original one or two owner bikes are pretty rare today. Most will have had major work at some point. You just need to be reasonably sure that work was done well.

Trouble is, like it or not, the whole: 'matching numbers' thing does affect the resale value of these things.. Though, have to admit, worrying about the resale value of an item you've just bought seems a mite weird, a bit like my ex choosing wallpaper for it's ease of removal !!

You just modify the offers you make to reflect the loss of value, just as you would on mileage or service history on buying a modern 2nd hand car. If you think you would lose $500 when selling then offer $500 less.

That's been true for me, so far. Sorting teething troubles. But, I really enjoy both 50%s.

I seem to be behind on the work side of the equation. I haven't spent much time working on my Commando but I have had a lot of fun riding it to faraway places. It made the trips home again too!
