I did it again saw a Norton with a bunch of parts had to buy it and don't know what it is? Pre war hard tail frame with girder front suspension. Numbers on the left side of frame are 7047 and the gusset has 1- stamped. At the engine boss is stamped 8 or a B6829. Engine appears to be complete and intact. Numbers on left side are 54934 with a 4 underneath bore is 79X100 which is 500. Pics will come tomorrow as I clean up parts It is not the dolls head transmission Thanks all
 
Here are pics. Looks like engine mounting plates and engine sprocket are missing. If someone local has one of these I'd love to look it over. The wheels are rebuilt and chromed, but no break parts inside. The tank was repaired and chromed but very rusty inside no petcocks. I've found that re-chroming leaves a lot of residual flash rust on parts not getting all the attention, but is pretty easy to get rid of. Might just need a good shake with metal prep and the usual nuts and bolts inside with a hasty rust preventative treatment.
 
First order is to find a complete one to photo. Then gather parts, from who? There are few bolts and only front engine plates. Need more research!

Looks like a Model 18 perhaps - I have Roy Bacon‘s Norton Singles books - I’ll give a look for the numbers . Joining UK based NOC will be helpful for non - Commando models . Their dating service will tell all .
 
Thanks that gives me a place to start and that's what I need I pulled the magneto today gave it a spin and it shocked the hell out of me LOL
 
Sorry but Bacon does not include serial numbers .
Here are specs for Model 18 and ES2 .
Some clues are you have the upright gearbox , girder forks and full cradle rigid frame as opposed to lay down gearbox , teles forks (Roadholders ) and diamond rigid frame .

Addendum - Not certain but I believe the Model 18 was always rigid whereas the plunger frame became an option for the ES2 in 1939 . Pics of the Timing side of engine would be helpful . The model 20 was the same as 18 except for a twin port head .

prewar the ES2 had the cradle frame as you have, the model 18 had the same diamond frame as the 16H.
The 4 stamp on the cases suggests ES2. I'm not sure when the tombstone gearbox came in but I wonder whether the engine and gearbox are post war?
No less desirable a project if the engine etc are later.

Oops, sorry Gene/Richard mixing up who is who there. :rolleyes:
 
I guessed age by the type of magneto and generator(never had opportunity to have something this old). semi upright gear box? girder forks and rigid frame. Single port head I know less about this bike then the 961's electronics and that's nothing!

Guessing Lucas M01L magdyno . If you are in Gap PA as per your avatar there is a fellow not far from you who rebuilt mine . I don’t know if he still does it but the name is Doug Wood . I can try and find contact info if you like . I might also recommend getting the Norton Singles engine DVD by Mike Pemberton through UK based NOC . He is the ES2 motor guru . At the time I did mine the video did not exist but he coaxed me through the entire rebuild via e-mail.
Very generous with his time and knowledge.
Very interested in this project and I hope you maintain a thread on the process .
Other helpful things for you will be the Main-Smith photo copy workshop manuals . Very economical.

Yes please on the magdyno rebuild. There is a large farm tractor group, Rough and Tumble near me it would be interesting if he was involved, all old tractors had magneto's. Thanks for the other info also, not many people know or want to talk about these bikes. I called Baxter's today for an Atlas part and apparently Randy really hates these bikes!! Setting timing has to be fun no keys only tapered shafts! Found Doug's phone number .He is in Boyertown PA. I'll call him tomorrow
 
? definitely the gear box The engine seems pretty clean and turns over freely. Unless something changers I'll risk starting engine and go from there. Is there something I should look for or listen for?
