anodized slides don't fit

I'm refurbishing a pair of 32 mm Amals that have about 4000 miles on them. Bought stay-up floats and anodized slides. The slides won't go into the carb bores. One measures .0025 more than the old slides, the other measures .0030 bigger. The smaller one I can jamb down but it binds, the other just won't go in. Old slides go down under their own weight as they should. Bores are NOT warped. If these new slides are only for Premier's then Amal should say so. They were not cheap but I won't hold the vendor responsible. He's just selling what he bought. Beware folks.

I fitted anodised slides to my Commando's and T140 Bonneville's carbs both of which were showing signs of wear.
All four slides were a little tight (one more than a little) so the already worn carb bodies needed to be enlarged but the benefit of that was it restored the original clearance so the carbs performed better afterwards.
 
Very strange. I've sold and fitted many Genuine Amal anodized slides for standard carbs and never had or heard of a problem until this thread. Did they come in Amal packaging? In other words, are you sure you didn't get knock-off or Wassell slides?

I had the same problem - the cause was the bodies were slightly out of round.
The fix was repeated gentle squeezing in a vise, using balsa wood as soft jaws.
End result was perfect fit and zero slop.
I think the damage was probably done by over-zealous tightening of flange bolts be some PO.
Hope yours shares this fault - you'll get a great result.

I had tried Wassell anodized slides in my original 932's...no issue with fit. But I think the bodies were too far gone wear-wise as they had about same slop as original slides. Went to re-sleeving (Bruce Chessel) and the fitment was very nice (he'd sleeved both the bodies and the original slides....I'd sent him originals and the anodized for him to make the call which to go with).
 
Sounds like warped bodies to me. You only have to over tighten once and they go oval. My new anodized Amal 32 slides dropped into place perfectly from new. Mind you I use nylock nuts to the carb manifolds set at 4 lbs. max. torque , which is very little.

Same here, bought the carbs originally from Burlen, 6 years ago, wrote to them recently re sooty plugs, they suggested a 3.5 slide, ordered the whole kit, went to fit slide, no fit too tight. Emailed Burlen and still waiting response

The boxes say Amal. I bought them from Classic British Spares and their web site says genuine Amal imported from England. I will contact them for feedback/advice.

Original slides both measure 1.3700. The anodized slides measure 1.3725 and 1.3730. That's 3 thou over sized.
 
I had this same problem. Both coated slides would go in but were binding. I ended up lapping to fit to size. Swapping sides helped, because one side was much tighter than the other. Now everything is working good. Might opt for the heavy billet brass slide next time. The chrome ones are the most slippery but need inspection often for signs the plating might be flaking off.

File WTF I didn't say file I said hone, if your old slides were worn then there be a bit of wear in you bodies as well, but as you say the bodies aren't warped but then how do you know they aren't and with only 4k miles on the old slides, are they really worn, when my original Amal's slides wore out at about 35k miles the bodies also had wear on them so new set of Amal's were brought back in the 80s, I was still running these replacement Amal's till about 8 years ago with over a 100k mile on them, the bike was still running good with them but I replaced them with flat slide carb's but now thinking about going back to Amal's as I miss the tickler's, so now have my old Amal's on the bench for pull down and inspection, but the slides feel good still even after all those miles on them.
With very little miles on your carb's after 45 years or more the old slides should still be ok, but then have the original Amal's been replaced, my Norton was a every day ride from new till semi retired 7 years ago and for the first 15 years of its life was my only transport, I don't replace things when the bike is always running well, but then how many miles are on your Norton all up, as 4k miles is very little miles for a bike that is 45+ years.
