original pee-shooters?

call me fickle but I took the dunstall replica silencers off my commando and put the so-called original peashooters back on ..how to tell if they are indeed original Norton ones? I looked down the tube with flashlight and see crescent shaped louvers but there are no identifying marks of any type on them ... real or fake?
 
Wasn't going to call you anything other than a Norton fan. Does it matter? Isn't it about riding the beasts?

I posted a similar question back in September - https://www.accessnorton.com/NortonCommando/original-mufflers.28823/. first thing I've got to ask, what year? I was getting answers both ways - original and non-original -- nothing definite. seems originals are supposed to have the muffler mutes welded, or brazed in place, and then the muffler assembly chrome plated. also, the exit diameter is supposed to be 1-1/8 inch vs. 1-3/8 inch for aftermarket. mine are approximately 1.0 inches with welded mutes. i'm no expert, so I really don't know one way or another. if you go the linked thread, I posted several pics of my 74 Mk2 mufflers which now I believe are original. ;)
 
I don't know. If you baffle it differently it would not only sound different, but it could affect the performance. The Norton engineers designed it that way for a reason. It became very popular. A copy might look the same on the outside and be very different on the inside
 
45 years you think the original mufflers inside be long rusted out by now if they had been used ???

If you can't tell if they are original and nobody else can tell you if they are original then methinks you are worrying to much! ;)
 
they came from a friend's 74 chrome in near perfect shape quite a bit heavier than the emgo dunstalls that I wiped down with wd40 and put back in box
 
As I recall, they varied from year to year. Early OEM peashooters appeared to have a slightly smaller outlet.

I bought a new Commando in ‘71 and it had the slightly larger ID ones.
 
I still have the original pea shooters on my '71 750 [ clocked 14,000 miles ]. I was told they originally came with a removable mute. If you look down inside them they have 3 rows of gills which form a deltic or triangular profile. They whistle on the over run. Great sound.
 
About 5 years ago I bought a set from AN they had Norton stamped on the end somewhere. They have three rows of scallops on the inside. If you really lay the wood on they are LOUD. In warm weather when people drive about with the windows open and you pass one at full bore up at the red line you could easily damage the hearing of the car
driver. Around town throttle back they are not really that loud at all.

Original design on my ‘72 was what you describe....straight through with louvers and glass packing. “Should be able to shoot a bullet through them”. Actual original supplied by Norton Villiers Ltd have not been around for quite some time.
