Just want to add to one item that has been mentioned that I learned when I started making up my own cables - you can't solder to stainless steel without flux designed for that purpose! So if you try to solder a cable using your rosin-core electrical solder and you get PO'd because of your lack of ability to do so, there's a good chance you are trying to solder to a SS cable!
(Rosin-core solder is fine for the job IF you are using "standard" cable.)
