Roadster steel fuel tank front studs (2015)

Can anyone tell me if the front studs on a steel fuel tank are soldered in/held in other than the thread being bottomed out tight. Has anyone got advice on how to remove one from the tank. I have picked up a good tank - not sure of the model though it is pre MkIII and is baffled. It has a broken front stud on the right hand side. I want to remove the broken bit and replace with a new stud. I have about 1/4" of stud to grip. I have tried to move it without any success.

I assume you have a steel tank? I have two steel tanks and on both, the studs screws out.

However, who knows what previous owners may have done with Loctite, Araldite, etc!?

I removed the studs on mine as I mount them using exhaust bobbins instead. Is this a common method amongst Nortonista ??
 
I use the exhaust bobbins too, easier on the stud hole inserts in the tank which suffer if vibrations get to them and they are a common leak point because of this. Hence the studs being glued or brazed in place, but eventually the whole insert starts to move via a crack on the of.

Fill the tank with water, then turn it over and MIG weld a nut on the broken stud - this will not only give you something to put a spanner on, but will kill any Loctite-type adhesives. Once the stud is out, get the tank dry as quickly as you can!
 
Thanks for the advice folks. I hadn't thought about welding a nut to the remanants of the stud. A good job for tomorrow morning.

Eddie, do you have any dimensions on the exhaust bobbins to use please ... anything like the std. head steady ones, or more like mini exhaust mountings??
 
Yes but I notice that they are pretty hard rubber. Somewhat softer rubber ones would be a good idea. Hobot used to waist them
and I do too . However used on the exhaust that way they have a fairly short life. Placed in the vertical for the tank Im sure they
would be fine.

Thx for the source, I had some of those and had no idea where they came from.
 
The advantage of using the stock studs and rubber flat washers is you can tweak the mounting position (height) of the tank in front. Unknown if either is better for mitigating vibration.

Mini (original) exhaust mounting rubbers are same size as Norton but softer and "waisted". Cheaper too. Available from your local car spares shop or eBay.
