Would you trade your Commando for a Ducati 900ss?

Beware of some of the advice you get on the Duke ……..the bevel drive lasts…..about 20,000 miles before the main bearing goes, the belt drive is better.
Do your research on Dukes before you commit.

well.........some last longer than others, but when your main bearing does go stop running the engine or the bevel drive drops at the bottom then takes out the top bevel and .........$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Need I say more?

yes things do eventually break - so your right there :|

Whenever I look at a modern Ducati, except for the Monsters, I see a very narrow use bike. I use my Norton for all types of riding. I can't say it wouldn't be fun to have the "Boy Racer" in the garage but for me the Norton is a better all round bike.

I am like Highlander "there can only be one" so I'd keep my Commando.

The story was , if you reved em cold , itd skid the rollers , leading to premature wear . Correct procedure not much over idle till oils circulated twice , Couple off minutes warm up . Thereabouts .
A pair of luck prxxxs ended up with a 72 Norvil 5 speed , and a blue frame Duke 750 SS , for a pitance . Engineer Father did the Maintanance , The Norton is Quicker , top end & acceleration . :D

I wouldn't swap a Commando for a belt Ducati, but I "may" for a bevel,,,,,
Bevels require good oil and regular changes as the filtration isn't as good as a belt. (singles only have a strainer)
The big ends on bevels are needle roller and belts are plain bearings, belts bearings last longer.
Bevels are very expensive to rebuild. If anyone thinks Norton parts are expensive, try pricing similar parts for a Ducati, belt or bevel.
Belts are very robust as long as they are kept and serviced as they should be, same as anything. They are easy to work on.

funny, i think the quite diffidently - monsters are OK if you are a girl (OK woman) or a putz - a lets drive around and pretend i have a great bike - otherwise, get a real one

of course on a Norton forum we we all agree Norton uber allus - don't get me wrong - i love my Norton - unlike most of those here though i have had mine for greater than 25 years and recognize its shortcomings as well as its attributes

i think most (AKA some) of us can agree ( or at least those not on the recent Norton-fan club) that without getting into the typical circle jerk commonly seen here - there are other bikes that for understandable reasons are "worthy" of ownership

otherwise you are missing out - but that's OK - i won't have to pay way more than i should for those other "inferior" bikes while you stare at your prized possession in your underwear in your garage - while i tack more miles on an inferior bike

But they were only designed to do a race or two between overhauls . You bought them because you liked setting up engines as much as you did riding them . :D :?

WOW! that is really brilliant stuff on so many levels....I'll sell my Monster 800 to a woman or a putz while I can still get something for it....thanks for the tip pal!

While in the end, I sold the Ducati, my Supersport was a great all around machine for me. Commuting, touring, track days... That little bike did it all. Sure, it's not a laid back cruiser machine that so many people seem to like ( I'm personally uncomfortable on upright bikes) but the Duc was fine for me and at 6'3", I'm not the smallest of riders.
