The wall mounted workbench in the old part of the shop is 68' long plus there is an 8' square assembly table. One day last week I came in with an item that needed repair and could not find sufficient space to set it down anywhere on the workbenches. Much of the clutter is motorcycle related. I decided to make up some full extension drawers ti fit under a 20' section of the bench.
These don't need to be pretty, but they do need to be strong, so 1/2" plywood is ideal. The paintable Crezone sign painter plywood is particularly high grade, with 2 extra lams over standard. At close to $40 per sheet x12 sheets, this would be about $500. Full extension ballbearing drawer guides are nice, but this added another $500. So a grand for materials plus at 2 days or more labour.
At 58years old I had to ask myself if it was really worth it, or is it another illogical project like those Norton Commando engine Performance upgrades
On Thursday I was feeling no older than 53, so I decided to get on with it. Craigslist yielded some good fir core crezone plywood for 12 bucks a sheet, including paint. I also found 22 sets of new Accuride full extension 100 lb drawer slides for $200. So cost was now about $350 for material.
First off was to rip up some material to attach bulkheads to the concrete floor. A dado cut into the centre works well for this.

Much easier to attach the drawer guides before installing the bulkheads.

End of day 1, bulkheads all in. Both the cat and I were tired at this point. I was pretty sore afterward from kneeling down and working under that bench, even though that part was only 3 hours or so. Everything is fitted to spacers as this hardware does not have much tolerance built in and I want to make all 21 drawers identical, otherwise it is too slow. Better to spend extra time at this stage and get things positioned correctly.

Real Estate agents arnt my favourite people , so anything that uses their signs gets my vote .

I am definitely spoiled for space, but still manage to make a mess of it!

Ripped up the drawer sides on the Raimann line rip, the big German saw in the earlier photo,. then used this powerfed General with the same dado set up as before for the slotting

Drawer parts ready for assembly. They snap together like Lego, the glue ensures that they can take a beating over the years.

Drawers all done, just need to make some pulls. I found a piece of al. Extrusion in my scrap metal bin, it can be cut up for the pulls, should work fine.

The best part is filling my new drawers. This phrase may have a different meaning in years to come, but for now it means getting all the Vincent 1360 parts out ofboxes piled on the workbench and organized in the top drawers. The rest of the drawers will swallow up construction /woodworking tools and material.

You have just given me the biggest ever guilt trip.

4 welders, three grinders, what else do you have to make me drool

There is a 15hp Kearney and Trecker Universal Hydraulic Mill and a 100 ton press behind the welders. The rest is all woodworking equipment in the large shop (thru the doors) not too exciting for anyone interested more in the metal side of things. But handy stuff nonetheless.

The shop is about as clean and tidy as it has ever been, the drawers swallowed up the clutter.

About 65' of the 68' workbench is reclaimed

The surface of the 8'x8' assembly bench is visible for the first time in many months.

There still is a big mess luking beyond the plywood doors in the main shop, however, I can winter quite nicely in this old shop space.
This was a good performance upgrade, I am already doing more work, even at my usual low rpm. More work means greater horsepower produced, greater horsepower at the same low rpm means higher torque. Even my peak horsepower seems greater, might be approaching 1/2 hp now!

Somedays they are all in use and we are frantically scrounging around for more as the glue sets.
I think that is why I now enjoy metal work so much. The glue (weld) sets faster, but you don't need nearly as many clamps!
