Winter riding Equipment and Gear

Ok will have to add thermostat or power regulators to list of Peel gizmos. I'm fine up to an hour with past, Peels shields but beyond that feet and hands suffer so maybe sock and bar grip heaters will be enough for far away travel. Don't think I'll like wired gloves so will try bar wrap heater first and maybe just heated insole but noting beats still air bubble. Seems most the memorable fun stuff is always associated with cold tolerance, Skiing, SCUBA, speclunking/caves, sky diving and sightseeing. I go aganist the grain of tight fitting helmet for ove sizer which has saved my life twice by its freeddom twisting around my head instead of twisting my head around neck plus let summer air it and allows thick hoody in winter that not too snug. Take downs with winter padding definitely a bit more comfortable too. If any of us had much common sense we'd just stick to cages.

There's a fine line between bravery and stupidity, and, even though I may flirt with it on occasion, it's usually not worth it to cross that line, even on a dare!

Every winter I go to a winter rally over in mainland Europe which usually means around 2k miles of riding and I find the most important thing is to keep the body core warm. I use a heated inner jacket over a merino wool top, add a lightweight jacket that reflects heat over the top of the heated one then on goes the normal outer layer.

I used to use heated grips and insulated bar muffs (do you get them outside of Europe?) but this year I was given some heated bar muffs as a Xmas present and they were a revelation. Ok, it was a bit warmer than most years with the average being between 0c -2c but I had them on the lower setting of two available and only needed summer gloves for my hands to be plenty warm enough.

More importantly the bike gets a thorough cleaning before I go then I coat it in ACF50 applied with a spraygun run off my compressor. I normally clean the bike again within a couple of weeks and no matter how much crud it gets coated in it cleans up nicely afterwards. The best thing about using ACF50 is that it 'creeps' along the wiring and gets inside all the connectors preventing corrosion from getting into them. I probably spend more time preparing the bike for the trip than I do worrying about keeping warm because I can always stop for a hot drink but the bike stays coated in road salt no matter what happens.
