I know this has been batted around before, but without paperwork (title) the value drops significantly for most of us. If you can get a clean title for it, that means a lot. Otherwise it is valuable only as parts.

I know there are states where titles are not that important or difficult to obtain for abandoned vehicles, but in many that is not the case.

Yes in ga all i need is a bill of sale and you could get abandon title but it was in thr contract on the house they bought anything on the property was theres

Chances are, there are numbers stamped on the steering neck that probably match the numbers on the motor and trans.
You sell that bike to someone who tries to register/insure it and guess what? If it was stolen - your ignorance of that fact will make the judge smile while he explains to you the trouble you're in.
Plus - how to feel about bike thieves? You have a Harley?
If you, or your dads Harley was stolen 20 years ago, wouldn't you love to have that back?

Your right ignorance is no excuse for the law. But if it was stolen and the ins paid out on it 20 years ago and the last owner cant be found or is deceased then the ins company can write off on the bike and you can get a title so i have read i or no one i know has done this and there is the chance that they do find the previous owner and he wants it back

IMO, the BIG plus is it was on the property they bought, thus part of the property ... they as the buyer own it. On the bikes If the VIN plate is missing; just ask GHP to run the numbers ... that are STAMPED on the engine. (as the "VIN" on the plate would have matched the engine. some may say, "what about the stamp on the frame?" Well .. some have that additional number, and some don't. We are talking rickety old British bikes that are 45 plus years old now. it is just some of us old guys had them when we were young ... and we STILL like them. IMO, they are just even cool to look at.)

Anyway, back on track, you at least know if the bike was stolen and then abandoned, or JUST abandoned. For a mechanical person, these bikes are easy to work on and fix. However, less and less people fix things like this and just do not care one bit about it. My guess, it is probably the latter.

As L.A.B. points out,

There should be a non-matching (850)F1xxxx frame number.

Then by all means ask the GHP to run THAT number also, and see if THAT number (850 F1 XXXX) was ever stolen. If it was stolen, YOU are a GOOD Samaritan ... that helped someone get their long ago stolen Norton back :-) If it shows NOT stolen, it's your bike. (or technically, the people who bought the property, but still yours if they gave it to you. For that matter, THEY can write you a bill of sale then.) Cheers.

I'm having a little trouble following this train of thought . . .

First thing I would do is make an honest effort at finding out if it's in your state's motor vehicle or state police stolen files. That should be easy enough and keep records of that. Then proceed with that knowledge and you should be safe. No guarantees though. No good deed goes unpunished.

2k tops, it only needs everything. I don't see it cleaning up into a runner without considerable expense either.

It’s the only needs everything aspect that will have you looking for a second job. Not trying to quell ambition but rather share some insight/experience.

looks to be a ' desireable ' one .

Seems low milage , but likely - just used back then , Mufflers not stock , wear on stauchions , suggest its had a few sets of tyres .

Alloy instrument holders Metal Tank , Metal side panels . That Interstate tanks rarer than the smaller Roadster one ,

Chechk the frames not dinged at the crash bar , theyre pretty soft .

Be mad to ditch it if youd like a hot norton . As in QUICK .

Being me Id do custom flat seat , alloy side panels , clip on bars , Cut'n tuck the pipes in as per P R ,
Blast whole Exhaust and black ( as per J P S ), rear sets , a Weber Carb .

Minimum expense and a period street / track bike . Not some polished tarted up S o b .

Sort of barge Id do , more or less . 1/2 n 1/2 . Cut the Side Stand lug off . its in the way .
Side Covers'd be a bit more triangular & tucked in . See ow the Exhaust Fits .

do it kinda like a stripped down Knucklehead .

It has one of those in place now!:)

You will spend 8 to 10 grand restoring that bike and be lucky to get that if you then sold it. Unless you want the satisfaction of doing the restoration yourself, I would sell it and use the proceeds plus some cash to buy one someone else has spent the cash to restore.
