Guitar string down the hole, residue on the string told me what it was. It wasn't totally solid, it was a rubbery texture. I picked some out of the sump strainer, next oil change. The head drains nicely ever since.
I've found it is rubbery, on the whole, but some stubborn staining of the alloy gasket face. Like most compounds, just make sure you catch any you're removing, to avoid it being transferred down into oilways.
Another vote for spray copper coat. It allows as little or as much to be applied. For non critical applications like inner primary to crankcase a liberal coating can be applied while engine joints where squeeze out can be a hazard, a light coating can be used to eliminate squeeze out. And again, no gluing effect to hinder disassembly.
The only place I don't use it is on metal to metal joints like the crankcase halves. There I use loctite 518.
