What is the opinion on reusing rod bolts, crank studs( MK3) ,a used cam with different followers?

Cleaned up the crankshaft, and hardware, Everything, threads etc seems to be fine with no distortion or visible stretch.

I doubt you would be able to see the stretch and it would matter unless you knew the actual length prior to them being originally installed. Which you don't.

I found some stuff lying around, the cam on the right is the MK3 cam that went bad and the others are what I found. The followers are some more stuff I found and I found a set NOS rod inserts. The followers have a very very minor line across their faces.

Just get two good spanner’s (sorry, wrenches) and practice getting the feel for a nut and bolt in the vice torqued up with a torque wrench, that’ll give you a good feel to tighten the crank fasteners.

In his excellent video, Mick Hemmings centre punches the fasteners that don’t have tab washers.
Figured out a way to get the studs torqued up. I'll post some photos if it works. None of MK3 studs/nuts have tab washers.

Right. MK3 did not use tab washers on the studs.

So, just going back to the original question, has anyone ever experienced failed crank or rod bolts AS A RESULT OF RE-USING?

I know there have been failures of new faulty repro parts, but we’re not asking that here, only if any one has had known good parts fail as a result of re-using.

You measure the stretch with a micrometer.

Megacycle can reface the followers and check your cams. They'll tell you which one is best and polish it up for you. Very reasonable folks.

sounds like an option, thanks
the photos showing the cams show that the others I have are not the same as the MK3, they have a cast ring with two of them having holes in that ring. The holes must be something to do with the breather. Can I use them?

I am rebuilding a MK3 and was wondering what is the running opinion on reusing rod bolts, crank studs( MK3) ,a used cam with different followers?
old cam, used followers yes, BUT the followers need to have the face reground so that they can present a clean surface to the "new" cam.

one dowel/stud
I like the fact that the tab washers cover the dowel and would prevent it slipping out. Perhaps I worry too much. I don't bend the tabs over much either in case they break off (1972 cases with no sump filter). I use loctite.

The "dowel" on the MK3 is a stud with nuts and washers on both ends, so no issue over it slipping out.

I read the manual:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:, found that were different MK3 cranks , mine has three fitted dowel studs, one a stepped 7/16" type and the others straight 3/8" Also it calls for loctite not tabs or punch marks

As far as I know there was only one type of MK3 crank, like the one you described, so I'm curious. Would you post some details about the different types?

The manual mentions different ones, other than that I have nothing

All torqued up, my rig worked good, used my trusty lathe as a crankshaft holder.

I think I use the torque wrench on the ones it would reach and then just tightened the ones it wouldn't by hand (and used Locktite). Mostly because I can't do math or have a lathe...
