Measuring the O2 ratios today and adjusting gear change. Once fettling is finished I'll see if I can post a short video of the bike running.

The RTV1200 was fired up this week, Terry Prince did,nt have noise regs in mind in 1998! The nighbours where out complaining..it appears the old guy across the road enjoys an afternoon nap..untill Thunder guts chimed in! Must admit the couple of back fire's sounded like a pump action
So an afternoon of baffle production was used. later today i will know if its quiter.

Pictures?

Videos?

Come on!!

Strange, this high comp 1360 with wild cams and straight thru exhaust is not all that loud. Or perhaps my hearing loss is more complete than I previously thought.
No neighbours complaining yet, however closest neighbour is about a quarter mile away or so.
I will post a video once I get a couple of small glitches dealt with.
Bike is now shifting like a dream after making up a couple of spacers to limit gear mechanism travel. Strange that Quaife did not include them in their gearkit nor make reference to them, even though they did supply these little spacers with the kits in the past.

My Egli, 10:1cr, 1330cc and 105 cams was quieter than my 1000cc, 8:1cr Rapide with MK2 cams. I reckon its the cams that make the biggest difference.

MK1 baffle failed, a back fire sent it up the yard! I have a great interest in war fare , the baffle was just like a mortar..Sort of a dull thud and it landed about 15 feet away..Eddie, wormtorn..get down to the ear clinic..this RVT is just insane with the exhaust...Wakes people up 100 yards off!

I will get a few pickys on here. prehaps a couple of the woman across the road with the plod in tow, when the bike lit up her husband srpang up in bed, asking what the Hells that? should'nt laugh the poor mans got dementure,,glad i carnt spell it ..never mind live with it.

Any way the bikes almost finnished,,,,had lots of issues...but as Terry said.."it is only a prota type" one of 6 made? 1998 RTV1200 black widow..in RED!

I suggest the noise level depends a lot on the timing of the exhaust opening point and the lift rate of the cam. I found with my old 500cc Triton that opening the exhaust too early made the bike louder and it went slower. It amazes me these days when I see Harleys with straight through pipes that are very quiet. I think they must have the valve timings of Fordson tractors. They certainly have no overlap. Thing is with a 1300cc hi-comp motor, it would be sensible to have a fairly mild exhaust cam - less anxiety - who needs a thrill-a-minute around town ?
The loudest Vincent I've seen was the Supercharged one my brother sometimes rides. I think it has a severe race cam on the exhaust. It is an absolute shocker - he rode it on the speedway at Murray Bridge years ago and said he felt as though he would end up in the river.

Here are some photos of the completed bike as requested. The only piece left to fit is the rear fender/mudguard which I made up some time ago but have not got round to polishing. The fender needs that after my last run with the standard engine, January 2013 (salt damage) The front fender needs the same treatment, salt messed it up as well.
The new liquid salt, which is said to be made from beet juice, might even be worse than regular road salt!

Glen that is a superb looking bike. I would love to see it in the flesh but that is not likely to happen. Long way from Western Australia to B.C.
Your a carpenter right? How the hell did you acquire the skills to put this thing together?

Thanks Mark.
I found that a lot of the woodworking skills are not all that different than metal working or mechanical skills. For example, building the exhaust system was quite similar to building a railing for a curved staircase, the railings being generally more difficult to do than the exhaust was.
The one main skill that I had to develop for the project was tig welding. For that I practiced as much as possible for about a year before getting started on the frame build. Once my welds looked respectable, a friend who owns a hotrod shop allowed me to do all of his custom stainless exhaust systems . After about the tenth complete system, things were starting to flow. There was a natural progression to the welding part of the job, because welding up the thin aluminium skin (3 pieces for the top skins) for the rear cowl and fuel tank was a lot more difficult than welding the small stainless frame tubing, which was in turn more difficult than welding the large diameter hotrod exhaust tubing I had done so much practicing on.
It helped that right at the start of the project I hooked up with a fellow in Norway who had been building a traditional Egli for about five years, building his own frame etc. He helped me avoid some of the pitfalls he had encountered.

The motor build was a different chore again. The Vincent is a very complicated engine and with this one being so nonstandard that further complicated matters. For the motor build I mostly relied on about five well known books on the subject, which did not always provide the answers. When the books didn't supply the answer, or were in disagreement with each other, I asked Terry Prince or Vincent engine builder John Macdougall for their opinion.
It is early days, but so far the engine seems OK, it certainly runs well and has power to lift the front end off the pavement at very high speeds, just with a throttle twist.
I'll see if I can post a short video of the engine running.

I wanted to give it more of a blast on the road to see if the microphone would pick it up, however the neighbour was out there swerving around at 11 MPH in one of those Kubota Golf cart/transport thingies, kinda squelched that

You deserve to be justly proud of that and your hard efforts sir Glen. Well done indeed.

However, I think the video should be titled 'keeping you in suspense' ... !

+1

It sounds and looks awesome!

I just read through the entire post again (2nd time) so beautiful and muscular a bike I'll probably have to read it all through again.

+1000. Great amazing bike & fun read, although as Swooshdave said & I quote " I'm not sure I can afford to even read this thread"!!! Glenn T.S.

Hey there worntorn, I just looked over this thread again and since I'm sorting out the old 2 into 1 exhaust system on my 850 MKIII i was intrigued by your nicely done exhaust. Where did you source the collector as it looks prefab ? bwolfie pointed me in the direction of cone engineering who almost have what I'm looking for but not quite. Cj
