I need some help setting up the slide height on my Amal carbs How is the correct height achieved with the Throttle stop screw . I have had them in a number of positions first with about 1/16th of an inch showing on the adjustment screw this led to and idle of 3000 rpm Should the slides go right down or should they be partially raised by the Throttle stop screw It is not clear in the manual where they should be set from scratch
Thx

If the engine idles too fast or too slow when fully warmed up, use the stop screws to adjust the slides (either up or down) equally until the engine idles at the required RPM.

Thanks I am trying to determine where to set them before start up Should they be right down or partially up I think the article the previous reply gave me might tell me as I have nothing to go on
Thx Jack

If the slides are fully down then the engine will stall as soon as the throttles are closed.

Turn the stop screws in or out until the engine side of the slides are just open by an equal amount. You mentioned 1/16", so set both slides to 1/16" open with the stop screws, but the initial stop setting isn't critical as it probably won't be exactly right. Better it's set slightly too high to begin with as it will keep the engine running so adjustments can be made without constantly having to maintain the revs using the throttle.

Start up, if the idle is too high, screw the stop screws out by equal amounts and if the idle is too low, screw them in by equal amounts until the idle RPM is where you want it to be, just trial and error. Readjust the pilot screws as necessary.

Attempting to do this on the intake side (using rods, drill bits) is often less exact because the slide cutaways aren't always machined that accurately also different slide cutaways are going to alter the slide height.

The function of the 1/16 inch dia drill bits or rods is not to set the slide opening, but to visually tell if both slides open simultaneously and an equal amount when the throttle is cracked open. For this purpose, the rods can be 3/32 or near mm equivalent.

Crack the throttle, both rods should droop an equal amount simultaneously. This tells you that the cable linkage is properly adjusted. If one rod droops less, the linkage on that side has more play than the other side.

Slick

Best buy a pair of vacuum gauges and take the guessing out of it. In the UK Morgan carbtune use stainless rods instead of mercury. Much simpler. Buy a bank of four and charge your mates $5 to balance their hondukiwakiamha. soon get your money back
