Thankyou for adding me and slight problem

If the dealer knows they are different then he must know what they are.

I smell a rat.

You are being given the run-around, someone has given you permission to self service (not that uncommon), someone has realised its a mistake policy wise but cannot find a way around revoking that permission except by making it impossible.

Self servicing a new bike and retaining warranty requires the owner to undertake the servicing to factory approved standards and using factory parts. Owner is responsible for record keeping to prove those requirements have been met.

Hello , Are we sure that there is no workshop manual or a torques table yet for the TVS Norton 961 ?

Here's the original email I got regarding servicing

Hi Shaun,

Apologies for the delay in getting you the information requested around servicing your bike at home.

Whilst it is always best to have all servicing work completed at an official Sales Partner, we do appreciate that you may not live in a reasonable proximity to do so and as such your warranty would not be invalidated should you wish to do this.

Please be advised, that this only stands if genuine Norton parts are used, and that the person completing the work is competent. Records for all self- service items must be kept to support any future warranty cases. Any warranty claims that arise due to breaks/damage or failure caused by the self-service work being completed incorrectly will not be covered under any warranty parameters

Best wishes,
Customer Support Team

Totally agree. Maybe they are loath to give it out though: I'm gonna phone Norton again tomorrow
Phoned Norton AGAIN today and was promised a call back from a guy called Keith. Nothing happened. Totally shit customer service considering Iv just bought a brand new bike. Tempted to sell it and just get another Triumph as I'm slowly losing all faith.

I've worked in the automotove industry all my life as a technical author, and giving out workshop information direct to a customer is a big no, especially when it's still under warranty. Each dealership will have the factory info, which they are obliged to keep to themselves.

Yes I get it that you live a long way from a TVS approved service station, but the warranty clearly states that the bike must me serviced in accordance with the warranty manual details, and part of that is to get is serviced by them. Just so surprised someone told you different.

Doesn't matter what the warranty states if you have been given the option to self service in writing then as long as you have the correct records the warranty stands.

I don't remember ever being told a head bolt torque is a secret, workshop manuals are covered by copyright so cannot be copied with out permission but the data held inside them is not copyrightable. Haynes manuals are a case in point, they get copies of the pukka workshop manuals, follow the manual and make their own manual using their own words and photos which are very close to but not a copy, but they include the torque figures and part numbers of tools required etc but tabulate it themselves inside the Haynes manuals.

If they wont give out the info then my approach would be to reply to their email saying thanks for the earlier response, state what you are about to do and when, including quoting the torque values you will be using (use the Donington ones or typical values based on bolt size) and ask that if there are any amendments required to ensure continuity of warranty for them to let you know by whatever date suits, perhaps a week later. Also note that if you don't hear back you will take it that they have no objection to your proposal.

This does not apply directly to Motorcycles but cars, however it would be hard to come up with a good reason it should not apply. BER no longer applies but the Competition Act does and has been amended to cover the same requirements.

The European Commission's Block Exemption Regulation (BER) and the UK's Competition Act of 1998 revolutionised car servicing rules, providing significant benefits for consumers. Introduced in 2003 BER allows motorists to have their vehicles serviced or repaired at independent garages without voiding the manufacturer's warranty. This regulation covers all service and maintenance during the warranty period, prohibiting vehicle manufacturers from enforcing restrictive conditions such as:

  • Requiring maintenance within the manufacturer’s dealer network.
  • Mandating the use of the manufacturer’s original spare parts.

Thanks to BER, as long as the independent garage uses original equipment, matching quality parts, and follows the manufacturer's service schedules, your warranty remains intact.

I’m an owner and in the automotive service / repair business. The difference between auto dealers and the general public is, you can easily find the needed diagnostic and service info online or off. It’s not hard to find dealer type information for automotive repair or service.

When I need Ducati or triumph information for my said bikes, I easily retrieve all the information I needed. TVS / Norton is failing to provide that. Why am I not surprised by this?

Because they also failed to inform us of all the changes and cross changes of the Donington 961 to the TVS 961 to this very day. Every fucking thing with TVS is a damn secret. Too much zipped lips for me.

When I bought my 961 bikes from Donington, I easily purchased a binder book factory service manual. Guess who isn’t offering that now?

My next bike will be a Buell
They’re local, show off the products they make and offer, keep people that have deposits on coming bikes in the loop and spread the news.

One guess who doesn’t do that.

Good afternoon Mr Anderson.

The technical data for the Norton 961 SP is supplied to the trained technicians within our authorised dealer network.

As discussed in previous emails, the decision to service outside of the dealer network, any warranty claims that arise due to breaks/damage or failure caused by the self-service work being completed incorrectly will not be covered under any warranty parameters.

So they have put you into a Catch 22, you are allowed to self service but they will not provide the information for you to self service as you cannot torque the head bolts to the required torque.

LBA Letter before action or reject bike as being not capable of meeting an agreed plan of servicing.

If the technical data never leaves the dealer network then owning one outside of warranty makes the cost of owning too high.

I'm sure TVS have already thought of this so instead of going through a lengthy game of too and fro ask them first if they agree to let your bike be serviced by a registered garage using original parts and tell the garage the specific information they need. It might work it might not but if they agree I'm sure there is a garage nearer to you than a dealer. If you go down the legal route you could be in for a lengthy, frustrating, and maybe costly journey.
PS where do you live and where is the nearest dealer.

Fantastic !

So in summary you ARE allowed to service it yourself…

And to keep the warranty it MUST be serviced according to our technical data…

But we WILL NOT give you said technical data !!

Are you certain you got through to TVS… not Monty Python 😂🤣 ??
