I bought a Gold Plug MP-02T as I wanted a magnetic one and had seen this one recommended elsewhere on the site. When I tried to fit it I couldn't get it started in the sump, just using fingers. The old sump plug screwed back in fine but the new one just would not start. I didn't want to force it as it felt as if it would mash up the thread.

When looking at the new plug it seems that the thread at the start of the plug is flattened and I wondered if this was normal, as I know theses plugs are supposed to have a good reputation. Just looking for some advice from those who know more about these things.

Make sure the thread form is the same, mate old and new threads on both plugs together and make sure they match.
Definitely the same, they are both M14 x 1.5mm threads and I matched them together just to be sure. I believe others on this site have used that particular plug.

Use a thread chaser file, or a simple small triangular file , to "clean up" the thread form.

Slick
Thanks. I returned it for a refund as I wasn't sure if I had got a bad one. The dealer didn't have another one to compare. I guess I could order another and do what you suggest if faced with the same issue.

I emailed Gold Plug yesterday as I was interested in their view and they responded immediately, saying it was possible there was a manufacturing defect. They suggested I try screwing the plug into a steel nut to see if that freed up the thread. I replied saying that I had already returned it and had been refunded and they said they would send me a another one free of charge. I didn't take them up on the offer as I don't mind paying for it, but I was impressed by their customer focus.
