Stripped threads on exhaust port for 1973 850 Roadster

My local Norton guy sends the heads out to a friend of his who welds in fresh aluminum alloy and cuts new threads.

Wes Scott in Fort Lauderdale. PM me if you need his number.

He says this is a common problem on 850s because of the re-design of the exhaust to accommodate the balance tube. The 850 exhaust nut doesn't go into the head as far as the 750, so the load of the exhaust is carried by fewer threads, causing undue stress, and making it easier to strip the head.

He's a fan of non-balance tube exhausts for the Norton.

Phil Radford of Fair Spares America has done a couple for me.

Good work, good price, prompt turn-around.

While you're getting it repaired anyways, you might check out Old Britt's where he shows his method of using twisted wire keepers to hold the nuts in place in order to avoid a reoccurence in the future.

Thanks to all for replies.

I am contacting fair spares first. I am from Ontario and so will post to see if anyone knows of a firm that can do this work a little closer to home was well.

Bruce Chessel at Triton in Canada did the head on my '75, but no longer does U.S. work due to hassles with customs poking his eyes out every time he received customer's work for repairs.

Well recommended for you Canadians.

How obvious was the repair on the 1975. I did contact Bruce who said he welds an insert and that the weld is unavoidably noticeable. Do you find it very noticeable once the nut is on, etc.
Thanks.

I sent my Commando cylinder head to Norvil a long while ago, and the welded sleeve insert repairs cannot be seen with the exhaust nuts in place.
