Pulled the outer cover to replace bolts that hold the pawl assembly that fell out the other day. Now when I shift down, the lever seems to want to stick in the up position. It is worst from 2nd to 1st, will do it every time there and sometimes in higher gears, and it makes it hard to find N. It seems to shift fine, just feels funny when the lever sticks up and then it's just in the wrong position, but it goes right back down and works correctly with little pressure.

Ideas?

Did you fit new non-standard bolts, or add extra washers?

No, standard original bolts, with new star washers, similar to original, during restoration.

OK, as there's only just enough space for the pawl to clear the standard thin, small-hexagon bolt heads, if the wrong type bolts or thicker washers were to be used, then the pawl can catch on the bolt heads.

I'll have to look, it's disconcerting, it does seem kind of like a sticky pawl. Thanks.

I'm not sure what it was. Nothing goes over those 2 bolts that would interfere at least on mine but with the outer cover off, it was still sticking. I loosened the 2 bolts, messed around with the assembly, and it stopped sticking. It almost looked like the tit that sticks out for the centering spring was binding on the plate, but not really sure. Anyhow it's back together and not sticking. We'll see what happens tomorrow.
