Stepped key for cam timing

..........Would you like to race a Norton 850 against a Z900 in a 3 kilometre circuit which has 12 corners ?
I did.....and TZ750s, P&M Kawasakis etc.....late '70s.....

The engine was fitted with a cam marked TX and no stepped key....

You might laugh, but what I did actually works and gives a major advantage. When the bike is more vertical and oversteers as you accelerate, you can use much more gas safely. Gassing a bike when it has a high angle of lean presents more risk, especially if it understeers and tends to run wide as you accelerate. The problem with changing trail, is the results are not totally predictable. If you have a problem, it can come from nowhere and grab you by the throat, when you are at high speed.

When I first started racing, I found that having the weight well forward was better. Later I discovered that if I got into a corner to hot and run wide, the thing to do was to trail brake to lose speed, judge the moment and accelerate. Most bikes over-steer when you gas them. It is counter-intuitive. There is a 'life at lean video' which says the way out of that situation is to use more lean - that is stupidity - you would need superb tyres. There is a corner on Winton Raceway which turns more than 90 degrees. Every time I have ever been there, I have got into it too hot, and headed for the tyre barrier. It is the way I know when I am riding fast enough.

I once got silly and lowered the gearing on my 500cc Triton. I led a race full of Z900 and H2 Kawasakis for almost a complete lap, but they blitzed me down a straight. I came into the corner at the end of the straight much faster than them. There was nowhere to go, so I speared-off to miss them. A Z900 or H2 is at a disadvantage in corners. If I race, I always take note of what the other guys are riding. It helps to know where they will be when push comes to shove. Under pressure, they sometimes run wide, where it can help. A good two-stroke is more difficult to beat.
What was the trick to make the H2 behave in the corners?
