My workshop manual says that there should be a minimum of 0.010 in. gap between the gearbox spring arm and the pawl. on my 72 Commando. What is the maximum gap allowed? and what happens if the gap is too small or great.

I have heard several people refer to a a ratchet spring in the gear box, what part is that?

thanks in advance, Neil

There is information on how to set the ratchet spring here: https://www.nwno.org/resources/OldBrittsWebsite/gearbox_a.html

If the upper and lower gaps between the ratchet spring legs and pawl are too large or unequal or restrict the pawl movement then the legs of the spring must be bent to correct it (even if the spring is new). The spring setting is reasonably critical, if it is not set accuratety then the ratchet mechanism will not work reliably.
