So, the speedo on my bike is pretty sad.

Drains the battery. And, yes, all these marks are on the inside of the lens. In the dark it's worse.

And, at some point the back mounts have snapped off, and been repaired in a "less than factory" manner:

As this repair had failed, some time later I had this:
Speedo rebuild

So, after some research I believe the gauge is a derivative of the VDO/Continental "Viewline" 85mm unit. The flip cover doesn't have any dip switches under it and is instead programmed with a program that was either supplied by or for Norton.

I review some details and popped off the bezel, then some time with a sharp knife and I had this:

Speedo rebuild

which I then picked the glue off to get to this:

Speedo rebuild

Given what I found, I took the gauge this morning to the a local VDO dealer who services gauges. They agreed that it is a Viewline gauge and believed they could get all the parts - but that if there was an issue that required a programming change, they likely couldn't assist with that. All other parts they said just looked like most of that range (save the face, obviously).

I left it with them with a brief of refurbish it. I'm expecting it needs a new shell and having come so far, a lens seems trivial.

I did say I was happy enough for them to "supply an entire new 85mm gauge and swap the board and face if that's what it takes".........so I guess we will see what it takes?

Viewer discretion advised !!

What a mess, but thanks for posting.

Very Good work Sir ! I had been told by an insider that any unit over 1 ma draw was supposed to be rejected. Well you can see that baseline was surpassed long ago . How many ma draw with key off did your unit have ? They Norton probably got a discount for taking these units ! What a shame , they would have done better with Japan or China made units.

Are they confident that there will not be a drain? and may I ask who you used. Skiddy

@skidmark they measured the unit and said it was under 0.1 amp and that it was negligible, no more than was required to keep the clock running. Also noted it was a marine spec gauge that had been used.

Brett did the work on the gauge.

@TonyA the next "problem" is now I can see that the speedo looks better than the tacho.

I think I need to see a psychiatrist.

Excellent work! Who needs Norton to support these bikes when we have all the great people on this forum....keeping these bikes going despite Norton, not because of.

The gauges have a permanent live. The speedo permanent live is to keep the clock time correct, and the rev counters permanent live is to allow the needle to drop to zero when you switch off the ignition. Later euro4 bikes had their rev counters permanent live wired to the ecu shut down relay instead, so that halved the drain, essentially. But if you aint bothered about a clock being wrong, there's no reason you shouldnt be able to wire the speedo permanent live to a switched live instead. You can do the same with a euro 3 rev counter, but it'll hold the position it was at, at time of ignition off. It'll obviously reset to zero at the next ignition cycle.
