I need to replace the broken glass on my speedo and tach. Is this a DYI repair or something more? Looks like it is peened over on the back of the unit?
I did a search and really didnt find anhything. Ebay has Eurotrash. Good no good, better source somewhere?
Thanks

The shade tree version is to use a dremel with diamond wheel to just cut through the old chrome ring. Remove it. Get new chrome rings and glasses. Clean up and lube as you like. Put all the new stuff on with a dab of silicone clear here and there. Next time you can get it off w/o bother. No one will be the wiser that is is not folded over. Been there done that.

The bezel on most speedo and tachs has to be cut off, and a new one crimped on. Possibly a DIY, but I would recommend sending to a shop that does rebuilds/restores and have the unit fully checked out. There is a post under Other Classic MC that has shop recommendations.

I have done several myself. If the unit is working, the hard part is done. They are actually not that complicated inside.

The bezel breaks off easily with a twist of a pliers. Once the guts are out, a little drop of oil on the pivot points, a wipe of the needle and dial face, wipe out the case, make sure the glass is clean, and back together.

I place the face side down on a firm, but non scratching surface, then use the butt end of a hard plastic screwdriver to work the bezel over, slowly a little at a time, I start with a N S E W tack to keep it on then work it around, several revolutions, slow and steady wins the race here.

From the factory the lip was rolled and any form of back yard crimping will look like crap even with rose tinted glasses.

These seem like a OK deal but there was some (internet) suggestion some are of debatable quality, these ones who knows.
I read somewhere that a very good bezel kit is made in New Zealand but never could find a direct source to them.

Even the guy off eBay doing them makes a hash job of the crimping, lucky it is out of sight.
$399 outright but have never turned a needle in anger so performance is unknown to date.

Mark Bohman from Ohio does a great job and charges $175 or less depending on what is needed...His crimping is perfect...I have dealt with the guy on Ebay and was not even satisfied with his work at all...

Although I have not had Mark do any work for me personally, my very trusted Norton mechanic highly recommends Mark.

I did this myself on a BMW R50/2 speedo.
I made a little fixture to compress the rubber seal in the bezel against the speedo housing for a tight fit.
This allows me to work the bezel edge over without having to compress it at the same time. You have to compress it slightly
to have sufficient bezel material to ease over, otherwise you end-up with a tiny lip holding the bezel in place, and a loose fit.
I drilled necessary holes in the wood blocks to create clearance for the speedo cable attachment fitting and the odometer reset
knob so the face can sit flush. Then I used a big hardwood dowel to ease the edge of the bezel over, sort of emulating a lathe.
You have to ease the lip running around the perimeter bending it it slightly with each pass. You can't just mash it down in 1 fell swoop.
Some bezels ease over easier than others depending on the material it's made of. Springy stainless steel is a b1tch.
It takes a little time and you can't rush the process but it works fine. Easy-peasy.
Here's a pic of my holding fixture. God I'm good.

Commando Specialties has or at least had repair kits including glass, bezel, gaskets and new stainless screws for the back, but I've heard the reveal is a bit different from the original. Other than that, I pressed a bezel on mine with a 1/2" extension, it looks like crap from the back, but from the side you can't tell at all once it's mounted in the holder. If you search my early posts it's in there somewhere. There is a machine to roll the bezels correctly. Just depends if you want to do it or spend the loot.
