Speedo and Tach cables fouling the headlamp ears?

My Mk3 rebuild is coming together nicely, but I've got an issue that is puzzling the hell out of me! I cannot seem to route the speedo and tach cables inside the headlamp ears as I believe they should be.

I've positioned the clock housings as close to the console as possible, but the cables then line up exactly with the top of the ears. The only way I can get them on the inside is to splay the ears out but now it doesn't look right and I'll need bigger spacers.

can anyone see anything wrong in my pictures? I might end up routing the cables outside the ears rather than haveing the cable outer rubbing on the sharp edge of the ears.

How wide are the spacers either side of your headlamp???

I'll post pics of mine to compare (excuse the 'patina' :-) )

...And mine. Same Veglia instruments (medium length stems).

As EstuaryBoy said. How wide are the headlamp spacers (066547)?

The thin nut (140304) goes on the outside of the headlamp bracket (with washer 602430) not as the parts are assembled in AN's picture:

My spacers are 7/8" but it looks like both the bikes above have bigger ones?

All those years being told to: 'wash behind your ears', is it any wonder I overlooked the washers 'outside' of my ears :-)

According to the Mk3 parts book, the spacers are 06-6547...
...the pre-Mk3 spacers are 06-2035...

...anything wider than 7/16" would visibly splay the ears of my Mk3's assembly although some Mk3 spacers could have been 5/8":

So it looks like my 7/16" spacers are correct.

I've 'dummied' up the headlamp shell and measured the space left between the ears, and it is 5/8" either side.

So my choices are: keep the 7/16 spacers and have the cables outside the ears, or fit 5/8" spacers and have the ears splayed.

I think I'll pull the original headlamp shell out of the parts bin and compare it to the new Lucas item, maybe it's wider.

Maybe fit additional washers inside the headlamp ears to gain a little more space for the cables.

If you had smiths speedo and tacho you can get away with the shorter spacers as the clock body is shorter (moving the attachment point of the cable upwards) so allowing the cable more room to align with the speedo & tacho. The Veglia clocks have a deeper body so you have to use the wider spacers so the cable isn't bent out of shape, as you are finding.

I've just found the original headlamp shell and it has 5/8" spacers fitted. (Rusty and unusable so were chucked in the scrap pile).

Original measures identical to new Lucas unit, so maybe Dobba99 has a point with the Veglia clocks? Only an inch difference I believe between Veglia and Smiths but maybe that's enough.

I know camera angles can be deceptive (it never lies, but CAN bend the truth), and I don't know how 'original' my bike is, but...
How wide is your warning light binnacle? Looks a little 'dumpy' compared to the one I have, and your clocks appear to be more splayed....
Again, totally inconclusive and may be just the differing pictures, but I wonder if any 'pattern' parts in the mix may add up to anomalies??

You could be right, the console is an aftermarket piece, but I'm not going back to my old parts stash to dig out the original as there's a spider the size of a small child in there!

That's the latest replacement type and does look wider than the original console.

Just quickly fitted the headlamp shell using the original 5/8" spacers and I think it looks okay.
