I am building a SPECIAL MK111 850
New engine 1007cc complete with a 5-speed h/d gearbox , 40mm belt drive and brembo's front and back. The inlets are 36mm and I have been having trouble obtaining 36mm Amals?
Any sugestions for carburation to suit and any idea on jet sizes etc. I wouls appreciate the assistance. Regards Stevo Melb Australia

G'day Steven, Welcome to a pretty good forum.
Rule number one,.. You must show photos and give all relevent details.
Is this a Cafe racer or Race bike.
For me, it would be Mikuni. However the Flat slide PWK Kiehins look good and fit neat.
Send a PM or E mail to JSMotorsports for info on PWK set ups.
AC in Adelaide.

36mm Dell Orto ?
Mikuni TM flat slides?

I can give you a starting point for Dell Orto if you need

Graeme

Yes pictures please.

FCRs, bit pricey but...

Based on the investment he has in the rest of the bike, me thinks that pricey is not all that relavent. That said, I would also contact Jim Comstock of Colorado Norton Works. He is a frequent contributor of this forum and highly knowledgeable in intake systems for Nortons. ( among most other aspects) He is currently working on a Fuel Injection system for Nortons that should be ready for market soon. He also has a carb set up that is awesome.

Go for 40 mm , if the Ports are 36mm bore . Std size for SS Ducati & Fast Vin. The Olde 1 1/2 G.P. per Goldie .

Steve, I gotta echo steveyacht on the commonoz recommendation and also add that JS motorsport has an excellent set up. i have similar plans for my Mk3 but with a 920 instead. I'm jealous and will be watching with great intrest. Cj

Welcome to the forum, Steve. Sounds like a fun project. Are you planning to keep the kickstarter and ditch the electric starter, or are you planning some other sort of electric start, like the Old Britts kit? I've got a couple 1007 cc kits from Steve Maney that I was planning for competition bikes, but I'm thinking about trying to use one of them for a street bike. I don't want to machine the drive side case half to fit the MkIII primary, because it defeats the principle reason for using Maney cases, strength. It looks to me like my only option for an electric start is something like the Old Britts setup. If you have another solution, I'd sure like to know about it.

About the carbs, I've used both 36 mm Amals and 38 mm Mikuni flat slides successfully on 920 Nortons. My choice nowdays for a 1007 would be a pair of 39 mm FCR Keihins, mostly because of the light feel of the throttle. With any kind of reasonably quick throttle the pull to open 36 or 38 mm slides all the way gets a bit stiff.

In any case, please keep us informed on your progress. It sounds like a fascinating build.
