Lots of black soot on the head pipe?
Ha ha no
No black soot ,I run my commando as lean as a Japanese bike
Mikuni TM 40 flat slide pumper
It's set up with a narrow band exhaust gas analyser
Plugs come out light brown I keep as close to 14.7 stoic as I can

Baz, can I ask where you placed the threaded bung for the oxygen sensor in the header pipe please.
I have a dual read out wide band set and should get some more fittings to weld into an old set of headers.

Maybe Commando's need a short section of flexible tube between the header and muffler like Sunbeam twins. (The first Isolatic with head steady equipped bike from 1946.)

I welded it in the left hand down pipe
Instructions said it should be within 200 mm of the head
I would prefer a dual channel unit but that's all I had

My instructions say 2 feet from the port, it does have a readout (blinking light speed) to tell you if the sensor is to far or to close to the port but that is a little after the fact once welded in so was curious.

Got my headers in the mail today and they look great! Hurried up and checked the fit on the primary side and there is plenty of clearance. Will post pics tomorrow.

On a different subject, I would question the need for the washer between the swingarm axle plate and the caliper plate (yellow arrow) especially if there is any trace of a gap where the green arrow is?
SOB broken headers!

There's no washer in the parts book and my Mk3 doesn't have or need a washer at that location as it would put the caliper plate and thus the caliper out of alignment with the disc.
Note that the Mk3 shock eye lower mount sleeve should be wider than the upper (see Mk3 manual section F5, however, the dimension in Fig. F14 is incorrect and should be 0.942") so in my opinion, the washer would probably be better placed between the axle plate and the non-standard shock also the same on the drive side as without additional spacer washers my apparently pre-Mk3 Hagon shocks wouldn't be parallel but would lean away from each other.
Removed that washer and placed it as you suggested. Thank you.

Installed my primary side header and silencer. Aligned header and hand tightened exhaust nut, slid on silencer and hung on footrest bracket. Everything true without stress and tightened up at the head first then footrest and lastly the silencer clamp. I am very confident in this install.

Wrap 1 inch of copper wire around the header pipe near the exhaust flange to keep the blueing under control. It should only go blue for a few inches past the wire unless your running lean.
