Very seriously considering putting on a single TM34 Flatslide Mikuni on my MK2 850.
Seeking advice ..... Engine is bone stock.
Which manifolds to use? Adapters, cables, filters..etc..

And importantly what sould the initial jetting be?

Thanks

Re: Singel TM34 Flatslide advice sought

Rocky Point sells the various parts. The cable for the VM will fit the TM along with many stuff like the manifold, adapter and air filter,

This information is from an ealier post. I had a VM and then purchased a TM34 off ebay. In order for me to get this to run I made the following changes. Note that the TM carbs come witrh "type"389 needle jetting. Others will report that they were able to tune using the 389 needle jets and needles.

I do not mean to confuse, this is simply what works for me. If I had the option when purchasing, I would specify this setup. For your 850, think about a P8 needle jet if your decide to go this route.

From earier post:
I could not get my 34tm to run with the 6DH3 needle and the 389 needle jet. I needed the 159 type needle jet. Here is the trick. The only way to fit the #159 type needle jet was to change the main jet ring (VM36/17) from a vm carb, along with the needle(6DH3) and needle jet 159 type #P2, you will equal or exceed twin carb performance.
I believe that these three item could be a standard set up for Norton. The Main jet (280)and pilot jet (40) are good starting points for any particular need. Pop in a 300 or 330 and feel the excelleration. Leanness and richness will have little effect. Carry a set of mains 280, 300,330, a 17mm for the bottom plug and a 8mm for the jet. 280 is good for mileage 330 great for kicking ass. For the price of the mains you can't go wrong.

main jet ring (VM36/17)
needle jet type159 - P2 to p8
Needle 6DH3
{needle and needle jet are key }
Main jet (280) (very variable as noted)
pilot jet (40)

Hi Jeff,

Hope you don't mind me cutting across your post. I also looked into the TM carb for my 850 MK3. I decided to stick it out with the Amals and did ALL the tricks bar sleeving. I could get the bike to run OK, with some help from forum members, but not as well as I felt it should or could.

I'm now thinking about changing to a single TM carb, any info. you get on fitting this carb, suppliers, kits etc. would be appreciated.

Good luck with the hunt!

Kevin

w/ mikuni 2:1 manifold (same as the VM manifold) - runs perfect - better than stock VM or dare i say it Amals

in my stock 850

tm4 34mm single

Main Jet 240
Pilot Jet 30
Needle Jet type 389 size P-0
Needle 6DH3 ( 4th notch down)
Air Jet #2
slide 4

for air filter i use a unifilter - not sure of size but was same as one i used for my VM

in my stock 850
tm4 34mm twin carb setup

Main Jet 240
Pilot Jet 27.5
Needle Jet type 389 size P-0
Needle 6DH3 (middle)
Air Jet #2
slide 4

2 uni-filters

i would say that single setup similar to mine would get you started and running - you will have to adjust a bit for 750 and individual bike requirement

Thanks guys for the good info. I have a carby on order and putting together the bits to make a kit.
I have a folow up question on manifolds that I'll post on a different thread...

You will want to make sure the slide is stamped 2.5 for normal elevation use.

A 3.0 or larger size is for higher altitudes, and even at my 6000 feet altitude I found the sea level 2.5 still to be perfect

the needle should be in the middle clip, all assuming a stock motor

the pilot jet is shown for stock as a number 35, with the air screw 1 and 1/4 turns out from fully seated

i guess by this logic Boston must be real high altitude as i have #4 slides and they run great....

Can't seem to find the 389 P-0 needle jet, only the 159 P-0

The 389 P's go from P-2 to P-8, the type 159, however, goes to P-0

While not listed at NicheCycle, There is a part number in the Sudco / Mikuni catalog... Sudco P.N. 003-575

Guess I have to track down a different supplier..
