Like ashman, my project this winter has been the shed itself (rather than something in the shed).

The shed was a very humble 5m x 3m. I’ve managed to add 1m to it, sounds hardly worth the effort to yooz guys with palatial barns etc, but it does equal an increased footprint of 1/3..

Unlike ashman however, there’ll be no space for slot car tracks unfortunately, but there’ll at least be a bit more space to work.

As we all know, these things take longer and cost more than planned, ALWAYS. But we’re getting there…

Looks like a fine work area, well done, but it would be a shame to spill a drop of oil on that floor.
My shop is a reasonable (for our local standards) 5x5 meter, but I sometimes look wit envy to the workshops of our american friends.
Sheds over here are usually the size of an american bathroom.

It’s looking spacious. But I thought I’d quickly measure my double-garage and it is 5.3 x 5 and I find it cramped. Admittedly my ceiling height is tiny at only just over 2m so I’m losing out with storage on high. A lot of room is taken up by a toilet in the corner, and then the old kitchen when we put a new one in - plenty of very useful cupboards and a double drainer sink. My advice to you is lay it out carefully.

Trouble is you need a shed to put the things in you don't want in your shed...
(Arthur Jackson rules, OK!)

So true, why we have garden shed 10ft x 22ft for garden tools tractor , mower , blower etc….. my bike shed started out at 12ft x 12ft , then added 10ft x 10ft wing on north end , there was never enough room to store everything and 5 bikes … since Norton and Guzzi left , it has become almost spacious …. Looks like Fast Ed did a very professional expansion , with nice detail …

Mine is now just over 5 x 4, so hardly excessive.

Hence the high shelves, bikes fit underneath.

I think I’ve got the layout worked out, we’ll soon see !

A 33% increase sounds great. Should make a big difference. :)
For me the workshop is 9.2 x 5 meters, heated and insulated. But still could like some more. Pretty cramped if I have to work on one of the wheel loaders. But ok for motorcycle maintenance. Plus one barn where a dozen bikes are. With a warm 5x6 meter part for the most precious bikes. And another almost empty barn 20x10 meter.

Size doesn't matter if you don't have an actual NEED for the space.

One thing that is clear from your photos - your level of finish on this project puts my hangar/shop to shame.

I intend to turn that shame around with the next one...

I’m curious bout how building materials are purchased in UK and EU … here we get 2”x4”, 2”x6”etc. , our plywood comes in 4’ x 8’ sheets as do all such structural coverings … after seeing how floor space measured in metric on this thread , I wondered how materials are sold ??? Thanks

Craig,
Structutal timber is metric too of course but I think each country has its own standards. Here in Norway we approximate british/us dimensions, e.g., 2x4" (errata: 4x8") equals 98x198mm.

Cheers, Knut

It's metric now but talk to most builders and it's still termed 4"X2" or 6"X2" and 8x4 plywood sheets
Sheets are generally 2440mm X 1220mm
