So I have a 65 atlas with the magneto. I just got my Scitsu tachometer back from across the pond. they replaced the battery and calibrated it. I originally sent it to them because it was reading low and erratic. I get it back and its the same. I've tried putting the tach wire closer to the mag on one HF out put wire, it read the same. I tries coiling the wire around the wire, same reading. I tried the tach wire to both HF out puts from the mag That seemed to work the best but still was way low, would not read above 3 grand on the tach. So anybody got any ideas, besides buying a new tach?

Are you attaching it up one HT lead and down the other, as the instructions say?

There's an adjustable potentiometer in the sensing lead. You could play around with that.

I gave up on mine and have now glued a £6 Chinese digital tacho onto the face of the Scitsu.

I think I have one of these somewhere. Is there a ground return wire besides the HV pickup wire? If so make sure it is actually grounded.

The adjustable potentiometer does nothing. I did do the two HF wire with the Z bend, it showed a higher rpm but not above 3.000 RPM.
There is no ground return wire.
the wire Clamp,,,,, I'm not paying 75 bucks to take a chance on this tach working.
It just sucks because this is a dedicated magneto TACH, (the black one) and I can't ues it on another twin unless it has a Magneto...

You may find it works better on a bike with coil or electronic ignition.

Even though it's supposed to be for a twin magneto.

Spanky, are you sure you taped it to the HT leads as the instructions state? Its easy to get this wrong, and / or underestimate its importance, makes a huge difference to how these work (or not).

If the unit has been tested as OK, and it has been wired OK, then the only two other things I can think of are:

1) Mag condition. If your mag is not good, it could be producing a 'shower' of sparks and / or weak / intermittent sparks, rather than one big fat one, thus confusing the tacho.

2) Mounting. Have you mounted it on the rubber suspenders provided? And are you sure it is not fouling on anything? These units are very sensitive to vibration.

I've run a few of these and found them OK. The needle 'sways' a bit though, so on balance I always preferred Krober. But it should function far better than you are finding.

Is it new? Have you successfully used it previously?

The wire is taped to the HF , spark plug wire. I'm not sure how this could be easily installed wrong. Although I've tried a number of different ways. The mag produces a good spark. The Tach is mounted in vibration free method. I just got the Tach back from the manufacture , so I assume its good. I do have the tach wire, taped to the frame. I think I will try insulating the wire where it touches to the frame.

I had- similar issues with Scitsu and ARD mag, and finally gave up on it and fitted mechanical tach. To be fair to Scitsu, I've seen plenty of them used on race bikes with no problems, and I used them on Yamaha and Rotax singles racers for years. Just couldn't make it work with the mag.

Its very easy to tape the wire incorrectly. It is 'directional' meaning you have to tape it in a certain direction, on both HT leads. Coiling it, as you mentioned, is a no-no. You are also supposed to keep the wire as short as possible, and, if I recall correctly, you are not supposed to tie it to the frame etc.

Whether or not fixing any of this helps you I don't know, but I hope you sort it out. I'm not sure what your other options are for an electronic tacho with a mag.

Just to understand, has the tach worked well on this bike in the past?

I tried the Tach on a weed eater and it worked perfectly. I believed it was a weak spark or the HF lead was a highly insulated wire. I pulled the plugs and kicked it over and both plugs had a very good spark. Sooo I de soldered the wire at the adjuster and soldered a new wire on, leaving the adjuster out. I put the wire on the 2 HF plug wires with the Z bend and it worked. It was a little jumpy but A Norton atlas bored 40 over is not a smooth bike when running, well at least mine isn't .... I should also mention I contacted Scitsu and Dylan contacted me the next morning. They were Johnny on the spot and wanted to make sure I got it working. Thanks for the help guys.
