Is this a bad idea?

I have a WM3-18 on the back and want to run a 400-18. The 100/90-19 will give me the same rolling radius on the front.

I think a lot of people run the WM2 100/90-19 combo as a back tire just fine. I run one on my front, but with a WM3. For normal cruising around, I would be ok with it I think.

Do you know where I can get a WM3-19 rim for the front? I've laced a few wheels in my day.

My searches have not turned up anything specifically made for the Commando.

IME the wider rim seems to make the front turn in a bit snappier.

Talk to Buchanan's. They have done loads of Commando rims.

You probably want to match the rear, but I went with Excel shouldered. I think they even offer chrome ones that might match the stock look?

BTW - I meant "For normal cruising around, I would be ok with the WM2 100/90-19 combo on the front".

The chrome Excel looks interesting. Will that rim work with the stock spokes & nipples?

I run a Devon SS WM3-19 on the back of my 74 using 4.10 TT 100.
I find no real change from the WM2 but then Im old.
If I did it again Id go to a WM4-18 on the back and a 3-19 on the front but
then I don't think I could find a SS rim.

Dan,

My advice would be to just leave it with the stock rims and do what you are talking about doing in your first post. It fits, it works, it's far less expensive and time consuming to use what you have.

I always cringe when a Norton Commando is categorized as a “cruiser”. A machine that handles this well is not the same as my Sportster which is a cruiser.

If the back of the bike is higher, that decreases the rake on the steering head and decreases the trail. More trail is better than less. Less trail usually helps the bike to understeer and run wide in corners, it would probably feel heavier when you are cornering.

A Norton Commando is designed to be two things - handle well and not vibrate. What you lose on the swings, you can pick up on the roundabout.

Anyone tried 19" Avon Roadrider mkIIs (100/90) on WM2 rims?
I use the Avon Roadrider MKll 100/90 19 .... The rear wheel is stamped Dunlop WM2 .. The front wheel has no ID as far as i can see . They were bought at the same time and from the same dealer .. What ever it is , i am very happy with these tires .. I had used the TT100 for years until i won Avons at a rally years ago .. Night and day for the better .. I just bought new Roadrider MKll for this year and have 300 km + on them so far .. Great tire , steers better and the rear does not seem to square off like the TT100 . $175 Cdn each
