So now...can somebody still send a photo of this plastic box thing that started the thread? Still never seen one and it's problems...

OK Hewho, the photos aren't brilliant, but I hope they give you some idea of the lump that fills the space behind the carbs on the 'A' model 850s and the 850 Mk3?

Hi thanks to everyone who replied to the thread I’d started and thanks for all the advice and a good few laughs as well!!!
I’d had a really bad day at work on Tuesday and I was really looking forward to going out for a ride to unwind a bit
The rubber connectors had been cracked for a while and when I was doing my pre- ride check I noticed one of them had split; No probs I thought I’ve got three new ones in the spares box I’ll just fit a new one , it’ll only take a few minutes…….. An hour or so later I gave up in disgust for the evening.
Now I know is a sod of a job and there isn’t really an easy way of fitting them I’ll try again on Saturday morning.
L.A.B I thought about what you’d said and I’ve fished the defective new connector out of the bin and I’ll post it back to Norvil with a covering note on Saturday morning as well.
HEWHO, I found a picture of a plastic air box on EBay; I’m afraid it’s not a very good picture but it should give you some idea of what it looks like…..

Photo thanks...

Thanks for the photos...now you do have me stumped. Never seen such a critter and I must add, fail to see where it would fit. Where is the battery going to go if that thing is in the way? Or does the battery on the later models, fit somewhere else, besides behind the side cover someone mentioned is prone to being lost. Guess I can be glad to have the older, simpler model.
When someone has the time, a picture of this thing mounted in place would be just wonderful...but it isn't a priority. There will be lots of other things to keep all of you busy for the weekend, I hope. Rainy here, and snow the last week...not friendly, to say the least...but...weekend is weekend. Go for it!

It fits here:

The battery wouldn't normally be lying on its side, but that's an Odyssey PC545 AGM battery, and it doesn't fit in upright, not that it makes any difference to an Odyssey AGM.

So Hewho...now you know why we've all thrown them away, and made such a comprehensive job of it that you've never seen one ! :)

Not EVERYONE has thown thiers away; I haven't.

However, I DID "modify" mine by cutting off the two bottom snorles, whcih allowed me to yank the airbox without yanking the engine, only had to remove the carbs. So, it's not original, but is still totally useable and mildly less restrictive.

AIRBOX RUBERS

On my 74 850 I always install the airbox and rubbers with the carbs removed. Its then an easy job to slide the individual carbs in place and into the rubbers.
Replace the 4 socket head screws and then the tank and it's done.

I must be one of those wierd people who has gone back to the original style airbox.

I have found that it's fairly easy to get the rubber connectors in place between the carbs and the airbox plate if you spray the inside and the flange with WD40. That makes them pretty slick. I then slip the connectors onto the carbs, and then use a putty knife to pop the flange into the airfilter plate. Because the inside of the connectors are quite well lubricated they can be turned so you can access bits of the flange that haven't popped through the plate. After a couple of hours the WD40 evaporates (I suppose) and the rubbers stay put OK.

It is still a bit fiddly, but it takes a few minutes, whereas trying to get dry rubber connectors in place is an impossible task.

Yes, it's a "good challenge" to fit the rubber connector when you use the black box. I know because I did it today :D Next time I'll try the WD40 method.

By the way, everytime I'm wrenching I'll face the black box airfilter combined with an Interstate tank and the original dual MK1's.
Must be a dream wrenching on a High Rider with single carb!!!

Regards,
Per
