One of the things for which Americans were always famous was their ability to tolerate and manage risk. There was a computer guy who worked with me, and used to ride a motorcycle to work each day. He said 'riding a motorcycle is all risk management'. There was an intersection where always stopped a couple of meters short. In Australia , we drive on the left. To the right of that intersection there is a railway crossing. On the morning the computer guy was talking to me, a car had become airborne as it went over the railway lines, and somersaulted across the front of his bike, through the fence and into the paddock.
It always pays to think about what could happen in terms of likelihood and potential consequences. 'In God we trust' takes care of the dumb luck aspects.
