Rim locks who has them and are they needed

Dirt bikes run two in the rear and one in the front but they run much lower tire pressures - 5 psi for my trials bike, 10 - 15 for the trail bikes. I got rid of the rim clamp on my Nortons years ago, never an issue. One clamp isn't going to keep the tire on the rim if you get a back flat anyway.

The P!! dragster had 3 rim locks to hold on to the 4" flat slick. The tire that Peel threw off was 120 on 18" rim so apparently more normal size matches don't have such immediate de-riming tendency.

A long time ago I rode an A10 BSA Super Rocket on a long trip through the rain with no rim locks. It wasn't pleasant when the rear tyre blew the first time at 60mph in pouring rain. I seem to remember having to fix three punctures to get home. It took me a while to realize the tyre was spinning on the rim. Chances are you will always get by without rim locks but there might just be that one occasion. Since then I have always used them with tubed tyres. At least have one on the rear tyre.

I use them on my dirt bikes if I'm riding in heavy mud and want to run lower pressures than tyre mousses but won't be fitting them to my Commando.

I do have rim locks fitted to the rear wheel on my Kawasaki 750 H2 but that's because they were on it when I bought the bike and now they're fitted there's no point in removing them and leaving a hole in the rim.
