Replacing Valve Stem Seals (in situ) Pitfalls?

I haven't been able to get someone to follow me and observe my exhaust but a have had people observe as I accelerated away. It seems that there is no smoke until I shift 2nd to 3rd gear and then there is a pretty good puff of smoke.
Do the overrun as you pass by them

That sounds just about right for a 50 yr old machine. If its been through the mill then maybe a bit of oil gets sucked into the combustion chamber decelrating and gets burned off while rustproffing the inside of the exhaust system on the way out.
