Remove the head with the engine in place

I have done the head removal and install the way the manual says to do it while in the bike, I hold the pushrods inbetween 2 fingers when lifting as well as putting it back on, once in position just let the rods drop but before you tighten the head down just make sure the rods are sittin on the rockers arms, no need for rubber bands or rages, I have done this on my Norton a few times as well as a few mates Nortons and have never had any problems at all doing it this way.

This is exactly how I have done it too. I think the key to success is to train your brain to hold on to those pushrods until the head is down, then as the manual says "let them drop". It's easy for them to slip from your grasp prematurely as you maneuver the head into position.
