This is one of the things I need to buy for proper bike work. A bench grinder with a big wire wheel on one end that can be switched for a polishing wheel.

Years ago I had one with the best stand I've ever used. I've been tryin to think of what I made that out of and I think it was the bottom of a resturant table. The bottom was weighted so it did not move around, the height was about right, and it allowed you to move it outside for the kind of polishing that throws black dust everywhere.

The wire wheels allow you to remove gaskets and rust very quickly.

At the moment I have to chuck my hand grinder in the vise which is really a poor way to work.

First I had to build the shop extension and other than wiring and sheet rocking the inside that is pretty much done.

There is a lot more to the motorcycle hobby than just bikes. It is true that I have worked on Nortons in a one flight up apartment in Boston but given a choice......

Here's a picture of the base I got with my grinders. It's really nice when you're working because you can really lean into it and it doesn't budge. Try to movie it though. I located it by the door for the reason you mentioned but you really have to wrestle it around to move it.

This is a camera stand that I haven't used since closing my big studio 5 years ago. I was having visions of converting it to (Guess what). My better judgement weighed in and I just sold it yesterday (to finance more tools and equipment :). I have seen older versions of these stands for cheap though and some old xray equipment uses this concept. You step on the petals and the base drops down off the wheels to a rubber tipped pin and it is anchored solid. You step on the lower petal and it's back on the wheels so you can roll it around. It sure would have made a nice grinder stand by cutting it down and putting a bit more weight on it.

The next time I see an old short style one around for cheap I'm going to grab it. The old ones are quite a bit heavier too.

I bet that truck drum is a bear to move alright. When I was a kid we lifted those on by hand.

I'll try to find a compromise that does not move when leaning into it to work, yet can be moved without my engine hoist. Since all I tend to do now is tiny bike work stuff it should not be that tough to find something when I get that far. I could get a lot of old stuff at work like rail car wheels, but most of the junk we recycle is way too big for my use.
