Here is a thread that goes into some detail of the rattle can 2 pack clear coat that I've used.
You activate can and good for 24 hours. Sprays great. One can did tank and side covers. Gas proof.
Works great but toxic.
Got from supplier to professional paint shops.

Re: Fuel cap seal job

Can you describe further? I'm not grasping how the pair of O-rings work -- are they in the groove forming the tank mating surface for the cap

Yes the o-rings fit in the recess in the top of the tank spout, so with two o-rings there, they just sit slightly proud of the spout and allows the rubber seal of the fuel cap to seal perfectly. The mating surface on my tank was not absolutely flat.

Hope this assists?

Its good - thanks - a pic would be better, but not necessary.

I have been painting lately with $5 a can engine enamel which says it is gas and oil resistant. It comes in a variety of colors and also clear coat. I put some clear shelving adhesive paper over the red and drew the Matchless emblem on with pencil, then cut it out with a razor and sprayed it before putting the details on with a small brush. I brushed on the pinstripe with One-Shot silver, the covered it all with the engine enamel clear. So this is all paint and no decals, and no two-part fancy paints. It is not a show paint job, but it is good enough to ride with and from ten feet away.

If you do a tank like this do it in the fall and let it sit all winter to cure well. Putting it in the sun for a number of days is good too, the ultraviolet hardens it up. No matter what, with regular enamel don't put fuel in it for a month or two, it takes at least a month for enamel to dry and cure completely from the surface all the way to the metal.

I have painted my current 650ss project with the same $5 paint, black and silver. We will see how it goes. Back in the late fifties and early sixties my father used to do a lot of brush jobs with Watson Export Enamel, which would flow all it's brush strokes out....
