I think I have posted previously this unit.. but can anyone identify the correct OEM cod eor even name of the colour of this unit.. I asked The Norvil Shop and their response was ~ "Yes it is a genuine colour ~ ! "

Oh Thanks peeps ~

Looks like Candy Apple Red to me - I've seen quite a few variations, and getting a match against genuine original stuff can be tricky as it fades badly over time.
I've seem some where the pigment has washed out almost completely.

Here's one I prepared earlier:

And this is the inside of the sidepanel I matched it from

Although the colours look slightly different (no natural light when I photographed the old sidepanel) they came out very close - the intensity of the red is also a function of how much candycoat gets layered on, as well as the base silver. Go too far and it could end up looking black :(

Thanks for your input.
I believe this tank has been in storage for many years and if used at all ~ (bought it off a reputable UK trader) and should not be faded at all.

I did not think it was a metal flake as it does not have that sparkle factor like the majority of others on this string. But I guess it could be a, perhaps a subtle factor ?

I learnt back inthe 1970s about metal flakes as I had an ALL Australian (Horn) Super car in its day. The Holden XU-1 ~ (Six cylinder- triple carbs- 4 speed- LSDm, all factory built ,) built in the days when touring car racing meant merely selling one 1000 units to retail to homologate/ qualify for premium touring car racing ~ What a fantastic GO machine !

Anyway it was done in a metal flake ~ ever so subtle.. purple/ black ~ and the metal flakes of the day only lasted 3-4 years in the Ozz sun! They then went to crap ~

(Me with hair ! :D )

I rebuilt mine at 45K and the journals were no more than .001 out of round and wear factor.. I had it bored to 190 CI and bought a Super flow head which was further worked ! A 308 LSD meant it would cruise literally at 95 mph ALL day and sing on tune while it did it..

I fitted Hopkin race seat with 4 spot race harness so it was three seater !! :)

I blew a front universal at aprox 110 mph but it hung on ! Cracked main bearings in gearbox, broke the bell housing and damaged the tail shaft ~ took three months to sort ~

Rust killed it on the L&R pillars ~ Only place that was not rust proofed ! Another mate in Sydney of the new 2000 millennium ~ also had an XU-1 and his was purple too, but a 202 ! His went in the same place and we both sold our tin top for $1500 !!

Try buying a genuine XU-1 for less that $90 -100K today ~ eh !!

OPPS back to paint ~ we don't want to be seen hijacking an excellent post here !! :) :D :D

Its perhaps worth pointing out that Candy Apple Red is NOT, strictly speaking, a metallic paint.

Its a clear (transparent) red lacquer - applied over a silver basecoat. And as mentioned above, the amount of red lacquer applied will determine the final shade of red - too much and it will go quite dark. Its also worth mentioning that the silver basecoat can vary considerably too - from very fine silver to quite large chunky flakes - but since the flakes are below the red, and not mixed in with it, this makes it not a metalflake type paint - it has to be applied in 2 stages.
(Or 3 stages, since more modern versions will also have coat(s) of clear over the top again...
Opethiselps.

Thanks Rohan

That makes complete sense ~ I have several f/glass side panels and they have to be done before I fit to the bike.

I figure if I had seen this colour when I first restored the Commando I would have done it in this colour ~

Does anyone know just how rare this color is? The Rock Store crowd that have seen this bike say that they have never seen one this color, although I haven't been to a Brit gathering yet with it.

Proper Heavy Metal!!!

The nearest we got in the UK was the Ford Capri 2.8 Injection... not in the same league at all!
Big-inch motors have never really taken off in the UK due to petrol being so sodding expensive

My cousin had one painted in pearlescent flip-flop with 'Silver Machine' signwritten down the side.
Proper Space Cadet ;)

Looking at the photo of the tank I'd say it' been resprayed, simply becasue the fibreglass tanks were just plain colours; the pinstripes came in with the steel tank 850s, to the best of my knowledge.

The red looks quite a bit more ruby than the ones I've seen, but shouldn't be too difficult to get a match for, and it does look good!
