Was quite intrested in these , for a jap shet . Functionality seemed to be incororated
as far as staying on the road went. For a change . Didnt look to ugly , either . For coffee racer ! .

Not that they were ever ' over the shelf ' for the likes of us .

Always thought the VFs looked a bit silly , like the L C 's on the track . They all used to practise their ' hanging off ' in NZ . Which seemed totally unessesary .

ANd they STILL sounded ring dingey .

Always thought the VFs ... STILL sounded ring dingey .
I have a first-year '83 VF750F with D&D pipes and it DOES sound like a 2-stroke RD400 at idle! But, MOTHER McCREE does it FLY! 135 indicated and I ran out of road. It got there in an awful hurry, too... It's PROBABLY the next bike I'll re-awaken after I move into my new place...

I rode my mate's VF1000R (the one with the gear-driven cams) - it was "scary fast" compared to my 1000 Katana (special edition to homologate for Australian production races - limited to 1000cc).

More rubbish from the eraq of a bewidering variety of not quite right motorcycles . Except from BMW & Guzzi, that is . Or wasit .

Geez , they even stamp out Ducatis by the dozen , these days . Intesting half the mods were to stop them falling to bits, or falling off the road .
er well , I guess you get what you pay for . Bring Back the BSA Bantam !.

The guy on the left is Ron Pierce, correct? I saw him lose the back end coming out of the Horseshoe at Daytona circa '79. The bar hit the pavement, he jerked it up, cracked the throttle and pulled a wheelie. I know Marc Marquez and even Freddie Spencer have done some amazing things, but Pierce was on a 450+ lb. streetbike-based Suzuki.

I watched Hailwood ride a Manx at Winton in the 70s. He was most unimpressive - he did not even stick his knee out - just fast and very smooth. The Japanese two strokes had 18 inch wheels and neutral steering. To get around you needed lots of lean. A Manx is almost impossible to lean a lot. If you hang off it, it does not make much difference.

These days there are a few XR69 replicas racing in Victoria. Most have Katana engines. I don't think any of them have racing gearboxes or race cams. The XR69 Crosby rode was a GS1000 with a close ratio box and race cams. It would have been very different to the current replicas - bit more exciting. Torque wins races but a proper race bike is much more fun.
