Coolhands I be looking in the Primary or timing case first before anything else, if something has come a drift and causing the motor to stop spinning, as you say the valve and rods are moving so not seized up, could be something easy to fix like a lose bolt or nut that has come a drift and jammed up, till you open things up could be anything.
I bought a 400cc motorcross dirt bike off a mate who the motor locked up many years ago cheap because he thought he had blown it up took the side motor cover off and it was the crank nut came lose and the crank was jammed in the case tighten it up and a way she went took a whole 30 minutes to fix then I was pulling wheel stands past his place just to rub it in lol.

What about the primary chain, as I say could be anything, guessing won't help till you start to open things up, any parts can fail even new parts and any nut and bolt can shake loose, primary and timing chains can fail, could even be something in the gear box, anything that moves, till you start to look, its any ones guess.

If you take the timing cover off, you need one of these before you put it back on.

If you take the clutch apart, you need one of these.

Other fun things to get...

WHAT TYPE of "noise" did it make? Rapping that got loud/severe fast? What speed/RPM/gear/load was the bike doing when it soiled the sheets?

I'm thinking a lucky/good judgement/timely catch by the rider for a failed rod bearing, prior to a broken rod & thus the crankcase not being violated.

Thanks for the info! Already have the clutch tool!

I forgot that I posted that. :)

It used to say wiggle it around. I changed it to move it around. I figured wiggling it would make it hard to focus on the job at hand.

Sorry for my lack of patience
You are a lot more patient than me I've come to realise!
I would have had that timing cover and chaincase off whilst the motor was still hot!
It's driving me mad waiting to see the outcome! :D
The secret to a happy life is more than one motorcycle. Damn, gotta ride the other one this week!

Yep I have 5 old bikes on the road
I try to rotate them as much as possible to avoid wet sumping and jets clogging up etc

Damn, that’s a beautiful primary.
