Can someone tell me the Porter paint codes for the gold and black for a 74 Commando? I've been told that PPG makes very good paint and I have access to a shop in my area. I don't recall WHICH PPG paint product I should use as the base, either!

Thanks,
Kevin

I used to use the PPG Acrylic Urethane single stage stuff. It is excellent paint but I now have to go to Reno or Oregon to buy it. Love those CA bureaucrats. I suppose you want base/clear if you are putting stripes on the tank.

PPG has 3 different factory mix pack blacks. 9000, 9300 and 9700.
Which one is closest to correct for the tank and side cover paint?

DCC9000 is a Concept line acrylic urethane single stage black. I believe this is now discontinued. DCC9300 is the newer version Concept line acrylic urethane single stage black. DBC9700 is the basecoat black for the basecoat/clearcoat system. All of these are/were part of the Deltron line. All are the same pigment systems. I use the DBC9700 with the High Velocity clearcoat for its superior chip resistance, gasoline resistance, and gloss. I'll use the single stage materials if I'm in a hurry and not concerned about chip resistance. Just my $.02.

We can't get Concept here anymore.

I have a Frame, craddle and swingarm to paint.
And a tank and side covers.

The tank and sidecovers I will do in basecoat, clearcoat.
The factory black/gold lettered tank had a lot of brown in it but I have yet to the mixing proportions.

For frame parts, it is easier and cheaper in single stage.
A gallon kit of PPG Essentials Black, single stage is $110 here.
PPG clear is quite a bit more expensive.

High end paints are outrageously expensive. I use BASF Glasurit 22 Line for single stage, their black is out friggin standing. But once you buy the paint, reducer and hardener your wallet will be empty.

$110 for a gallon kit of PPG Essentials black is not too expensive. The kit includes hardener and reducer.
It's actually cheaper than spray cans per quantity of paint you get. A gallon of paint will last you a long time.

The problem is good, high end primer costs a lot too.
As does clear.

For primer over metal frame parts, I've been experimenting with the Spraymax line of paint.
$21 for a can which includes an integrated activator.

Not as good as the Dupont Variprime I used to be able to buy, but not too bad.
Safer too.

PPG has several paint lines at several different prices. Deltron is a high end solvent borne line that includes the "custom" Concept lines. The Delfleet Essential line is considered their "Commercial" line for truck and fleet. I'm surprised that you can buy either line in California. I understand most body shops there are now using the water borne lines like Aquabase and Envirobase due to HAPS (air pollutants).

The BASF Glasurit line is also an excellent paint. However, as Maylar states, it's as expensive as Deltron.

The local PPG dealer has Essential , Shopline, Environbase and Vibrance. Only the Environbase is water based. "Essential" is marketed for commercial but people paint cars with it too. Good, strong paint for motorcycle frames and ancillary parts.

They have a direct-to-metal version which I would like to test:
