One piece oil ring

Any good alternatives to Hastings piston rings with the three piece oil control ring? Just put a set of Emgo pistons and Hastings rings in my 71 roadster. Just thinking the job would have been a lot easier with one piece oil ring or if Norton had been smart enough to have put at least a tiny chamfer on the bottom of the bores.
 
1971 cylinders have a large chamfer at the cylinder base and even a massive overbore would retain some of it. ?

I pulled the engine back out of my 850 to remove the ring packs with one piece oil ring and replaced them with Hastings packs with the 3 piece oil control.
(I replaced the dodgy (new) alloy KB pushrods with Moly items from Ken C at the same time)

The only thing worse than those crap rings would be a drum brake and 3 speed gearbox.
 
My cylinders are. 040 over...no sign of chamfer. I've always been able to use ordinary hose clamps on any other engine I've worked on. Not this one. Royal Enfield twins don't even need a ring squeezer
Enough chamfer to slide the jug right on.

The one piece rings that were installed at GCC made Grampy's T150 smoke like a two stroke.
Never again.

I had to put in the three piece rings to cure it

Any chance your cylinders have been re-sleeved? There is normally a generous chamfer on the bottom of the bores.
 
Lots of previous discussion about the one piece vs 3 piece oil control rings. Look it up.
A couple of points: it is unlikely that the Emgo pistons you installed have Hastings rings, unless somebody has access to NOS Hastings rings. According to Hastings, they don't make rings for Nortons anymore.
If you are looking for a one piece oil control ring, they are available through Heppolite. Not sure if they will fit an Emgo piston.
You will see from the previous discussions, the Heppolite one piece ring can be very difficult to install. And has tons of initial drag on the cylinder wall. Some folks find this unacceptable and either modify the expander ring, or won't use them at all.
Some folks have found them to be acceptable.
Pick your poison.

these are the rings i installed. They say Hastings but are not the originals from days gone by. These are the original cylinders. Bored .020 over, you can see a slight chamfer but not enough to make a difference. The cylinders replacing these are .040 over, certainly not enough to wipe out any chamfer that might have been these.

Sorry, missed that post. No, not sleeved and also not chamfered - weird!

The EMGO pistons are probably JCC (look inside). If so, the Hepolite rings will work as the Hepolite pistons are JCC.
