I removed the rear tab, after the second time it cracked. I came up with a two piece rear mount that clamps on to the filler neck. I wanted to include a picture of this, but it just doesn't show up in a photo very well. Take steel tubing about the same size at the filler neck. Cut off a "ring" of it, approx 1/2" wide. Cut that ring into two halves. Fit them around the neck., and hold them on with a very thin hose clamp. I used one off of a BMW fork gaiter. Probably not much wider than 1/4", but fairly strong. You'll have to do a little grinding on the rings to get them to mount low on the tank. When you place them on the tank, you'll see what I mean. Once I had that in place, I made a bracket that came out to have a mounting hole exactly where the original tab mounted. Brazed that on to the rear half ring. So the whole thing clamps on to the tank - three parts - two halves of the ring, one with the tab attached to it - and the clamp. I've done two of these, and they have both held up very well. I even got a nod from a very well renowned British wrench when he saw it.

I would like to see that, if you could please. I tried to fabricate something similar and ran into problems getting a "ring" around the filler neck and clearing the breather tube. My top mount has broken off (again) and I currently just have a rag stuffed in there to keep the tank from bouncing around.

I hope these help a little. You have to grind a little off the front ring to clear the vent tube on the oil tank. Not really sure what the clamp came off of, I said BMW fork boot, but appears even smaller than that. The basic gist is to make the rings wide enough to clear the top of the tank and not interfere with the cap, and sit low as possible to give a good surface to clamp to. The whole process came about as a quick fit to a broken bracket, without having to drain the oil, pull off the tank, all that stuff. Lived on a a permanent fix. Hope this helps!

The seam welding operation appears to be a bit off the rail as made from new. One side follows contour, the other runs straight off. Were they all like that?

Just getting around to posting some images. Now a bit out of sequence from those above.
The area looked just fine to the naked eye, no cracks in the paint detected. The paint is rubbed off the weld as I had incorporated a large O-ring as a pre-emptive strike last time around.

The rubber, 1/4" neoprene from the hardware store, plus a 1/8" layer (with cord, only because I had it on hand) to equal the height of the original grommet affair

For the post, I used an over length 1/4-28 bolt, shod with a 1/4" braided jacket oil hose, to locate the bottom of the tank

Just purchased an oil tank off eBay, not well photographed so did not see the modifications but the price was a steal. On receipt I noticed the welded bottom, reinforcement at the rear tab (normal?), and the clamped off chain oiler tube. What do you think of the work and would you proceed with a tank dip and painting? Any additional mods you would suggest? Overall the seams and the interior seem solid.

Looks like good mods. Pressure test as shown above.
