I recently repaired a BMW final drive drain plug with a Timesert. It was relatively straight forward and is working well. Seems to be far stronger than the original aluminum. I will say that you do have to follow the instructions carefully, particularly when you drill the hole (to ensure it's parallel to the original hole, and during the installation of the insert (lubricating beforehand). The kit is a bit pricey but comes with the correct drill bit, tap, a few inserts and the installation tool.
 
If I had that in one of my engines I would be very nervous about even starting it :eek:

It's buried deep and held in with JB Weld. It's not going anywhere. It's just the edge that is iffy. Not a lot of material to grab onto.
