Hi guys,

I'm hoping that someone out there can help me. The 1970 Roadster that I am putting back together has an external oil filter - the type that fits to the rear engine/gearbox mount. The filter cartridge needs changing, but my one doesn't have any identifying number on it - it is plain chrome plated.

I'm in New Zealand, and don't want to have to write to Andover or Norvil just to get the cartridge from the UK. Does anyone know the identifying number and type of cartridge; I am reasonably confident that I can buy one locally if I can specify what I am after.

Chris,

i assume the retro fitted filters on the earlier bikes are the same as the stock ones on the later bikes.
If so look up Citroen 2CV in the catalogue at supercheap, repco etc, should be one on the shelf - but won't be chrome.
Some older model Harley ones also fit and do come in chrome if polishing is your thing.

Ryco make the filter suited a number of cars and also Ryco's catalogue identifies Norton Commando. I think it is Z92 or Z93 but check first. Any good auto store should be able to supply.

Also try British Spares in Upper Hutt. See their website, good stuff.

Cheers,
Mick

I have seen on EBay an adaptor that allows you to fit a "modern " filter .. I have one mad e by a mate .. as a result I now use Fleetguard LF3460 filters which he felt as a diesel mechanic/ fitter is far far more efficient ~

Not too hard ~ just get a good machinist ~ or watch EBay ~

Matt at Colorado Norton Works also makes an adapter. I've got one.

Sure makes finding quality filters a bunch easier. Can't see any tradeoffs with it.

Hey Chris,
I live in the Mount and have a 73 850.
I use the Fram PH2839 from Supercheap.

Cheers

Good to see there are a few of us that realise that a "Simca" oil filter which (car) went extinct in the 1960-70s ~ and have the sanity to realise that modern filters 30 years later have to be a far far better deal than the originals ~

Have Matt's kit on both bikes, Seems like a great deal considering I have seen people try to get more than that for just a stock filter, Chuck.

The standard 850 oil filter is the same as most Ducati. I like the K & N filter (KN153 in the US) because it is readily available and has that handy nut welded on the back to install/remove the filter. The nut is also drilled for safety wiring, though not necessary on the Norton, as it has that clamp to secure the filter.

The Ducati K & N filter is around $12.

I would also recommend getting the threaded adaptor that allows you to run a much wider range of readily available filters at much lower cost. Someone mentions a Ducati filter for 12 bucks but a regular old WIX filter costs me a third of that or less. The adaptor will pay for itself in short order.
