I’ve almost finished the build of my 72 interstate and was having a close look at the tank about to take it to the painter. There is a small dent just in front of the fuel filler. It almost looks like it is supposed to be there as the fuel cap hook catch almost fits there if the cap is pressed down when closing. I haven’t got another tank close by to compare. Is it original? It’s an odd place to get a dent and is only 20 mm diameter (less than an inch).

‘72 Interstate originally had a fiberglass tank, so not really possible to dent it.

You are lucky because you have very easy access to get in to gently tap it back , pre-paint.

However it is a steel tank and has a dent.

Where be the picture of said dent ?
I sold the tank I had so forget what was there, but based on the fuel caps being the same across the range there has to be something of a recess same as the steel Roadster tank ?<

Yeah we need a pic because it could be a stock recess ?

My steel interstate tank has a dent/depression in front of the filler - see below.
Cheers

The Robs ss pic does almost look like a 'dent.
I notice the Roadster tank has more of a two level pressed square/rectangular recess, certainly not a dent.

If the cap fits, wear it!

(Think how stupid you would feel if the first time you closed the cap.......)

Thanks RobsSS. That depression is what I’ve got. I haven’t got a photo of it as it is now out for paint stripping. Guess there’s no need to tap it out and fill it. It must be for the clicks downy thing.

Clicky Thingy sounds so much better though to us po' ole country folk.

Mine has the identical indentation. Don't know the exact year of my tank but it is not original to the bike.
