I found this little bit info and thought I'd share it.

State of Vermont Titles

I extracted this information from Bill Dudley on the Yahoo! Loopframe_Guzzi news group. In Bill's own words:

Here's how to get titles for old bikes with no time wasting middle man:

1. Go to Vermont DMV web site. http://www.aot.state.vt.us/dmv/
2. Download forms and print them out. Here they are:
Instructions http://www.aot.state.vt.us/dmv/document ... ration.pdf
Actual registration form http://www.aot.state.vt.us/dmv/document ... AVD119.pdf
3. Fill out the form (just one side, call Montpelier if you need help)
4. Have local authorities (in NJ, it's the police) fill out a VIN verification form attesting that the VIN is what you say it is.
5. Write a check for title + sales tax. For our old Guzzi's, they will trust you to tell them the truth on how much you paid. For newer vehicles (1985+ ?) they use the Kelly Blue Book value so you can't get away with claiming you bought a 1990 Ducati for $200. KBB doesn't go back very far past 1990, so we're safe. Vermont sales tax is 6%.
6. Mail the completed forms and check to Vermont DMV.

In two weeks or so, you will receive a Vermont Registration and a green License plate in the mail. NO MATTER WHERE YOU LIVE! Basically, they are in it for the money, which is fine with me. Vermont does not title vehicles older than 15 years -- so our old bikes just get a reggie. Then, take your Vermont Reggie to your local DMV and tell them that you just brought the bike from VT and you want to title it in your state. In NJ, you now have a TITLE. (And NJ can be a real pain in the ass about this stuff.) I had to pay the sales tax difference, since NJ is 7%, I had to pay 1% sales tax plus the title charge to get my NJ titles.

I've just done this in NJ for a 79 Yamaha and an 84 Guzzi V65, and it has worked fine. (It helps if you get a DMV clerk who is not a jerk, however.)

If you have questions about the procedure, or how to fill out the form, just call the helpful DMV personnel in Montpelier and they will help you out. (802) 828-2000

This whole process will cost you WAY LESS than its-titles will charge you. Trust me.

This post is my revenge on its-titles for wasting my time and not being the least repentant about it when I called them up to complain. They couldn't give a rat's ass that they had wasted hours of my time filling out obsolete forms and waiting for them to just mail them back to me. Well, screw them!

More interestingly when you go to ITS site and download one of the forms...

Yup, State of Vermont documents...

Hmmmmmm....

ITS used to use State of Maine registrations (I've done at least a half dozen).

I think I'll try Vermont next time!

about 14 or so years ago, I got a vermont title for my commando through a middleman, about $50, if I remember correctly. not bad.

From what I've heard, these days the local DMV won't honor any out of state titles unless you can provide a bill of lading from an ocean freight service, that says 'motorcycle' on it. What a bunch of clowns! what if you ship to the islands in pieces, via UPS, then reassemble here?

Illinois is kind of messed up when it comes to titling old vehicles. I've used ITS many times w/o a problem, but I hear stories of guys having more trouble acquiring new paperwork for old bikes. I have also heard Illinois not accepting registration paperwork from ITS anymore because they told a guy from around here it was illegal paperwork. I have never heard of that before. I also have heard stirrings that the broke state of Illinois is going to start charging full value on all vehicles for taxing purposes. I know blue book may not go back far, but have you checked the NADA guide lately? they having book values on just about every motorcycle imaginable and I see the state requiring you to bring the vehicle in or getting appraisals done to get tax title and license processed. This brings up all kinds of head aches for the future of buying and selling vehicles at least here. States being broke brings out the worst.

Let us know if your Vermont thing works. I know the internet title companies have become more difficult to work with - it costs a lot more now and I think you need a notarized bill of sale. It's getting a lot more difficult to put one of these things through in Colorado. DMV is on to it now. Maybe Oregon DMV is more laid back?

good luck,
Debby

I'm glad we don't have to go through all that "title document" stuff in the UK, it sounds like a right nightmare!

It is a nightmare, and it's getting worse all the time. I won't buy anything without a clear, current, valid title anymore. Too much hassle, just not worth it.

Really, compared to MOT and all that stuff? If you had a bike with no documentation, would you be able to get it registered in the UK?

I rebuilt a Triumph a long time ago and took it down to get registered. I had a title, etc. so it was easy. Guy came out to check the VIN and make sure the bike had the correct equipment. Check the brake lights and then asked me to show the left turn signal. I stuck my left arm out.

The MOT is just an annual safety inspection, and I know we tend to make a bit of a fuss about it, but if a vehicle is in good roadworthy condition then there's no reason why it shouldn't pass the inspection and if it's not up to MOT standard then it shouldn't be on the road anyway.

Yes, I don't believe its particularly difficult to do that.

So how do people get a title for a triton or special vintage build? I was always under the impression tritons were titled for the year of the frame, but if you don't have a title for a featherbed what do you do?
